It is Earth Science Week and now, more than ever, earth sciences are critical to improving community resilience. The recent events across the United States have been catastrophic and life changing for so many. Unfortunately, we expect climate and extreme weather impacts to be our "new normal". To mitigate and adapt, we must prioritize interdisciplinary, cross-sector, and inclusive partnerships for research, development, and deployment to achieve solutions that advance public safety. This increasing need is not lost on DHS Science and Technology Directorate and it is why the new Earth Systems Science Technology Center was established: To support an integrated response to threats from climate change, extreme weather, environmental pollution, global diseases and other interactions between human and earth systems. The Center offers new and complementary science capabilities to DHS and is unique in the federal government for applying Earth systems science directly to public safety and national security issues. For at least a century, scientists have thought that the doldrums’ lack of wind was caused by converging and rising air masses, but the new study suggests that the opposite may be true. More on the science behind the doldrums: https://bit.ly/3XUnNUY Photo credit 📷: American Geophysical Union
