Advocating for Healthy Coastlines
About us
The American Shore & Beach Preservation Association is dedicated to preserving, protecting and enhancing the beaches, shores, and other coastal resources of America by merging science and public policy. We advocate for healthy, sustainable, and resilient coastal systems to sustain four interconnected core values provided by shores and beaches: community protection, a strong economy, ecologic health, and recreation. We fulfill our mission by: - Protecting and improving healthy and diverse recreational opportunities. - Managing, protecting and enhancing environmental resources. - Encouraging responsible and sustainable economic development. - Preserving aesthetic values. - Reducing damage from natural hazards and human activities. - Mitigating human impacts to natural processes. ASBPA recognizes that our shores, beaches, and coastal resources provide important quality-of-life assets within reach of the largest possible number of America’s citizenry from coast to coast, and along the Great Lakes.

We are jetting (in our minds) to the PNW to celebrate the Seattle, WA Lowman Beach Park Shoreline Restoration 2024 Best Restored Shores Award. The Lowman Beach Park Shoreline Restoration is a standout example of urban shoreline restoration and serves as a blueprint for similar projects in urban areas constrained by existing infrastructure and private properties. The project aimed to enhance both the park and the shoreline in a sustainable manner, achieving multiple objectives including improving park access, enhancing ecological process, expanding nearshore habitat, and enhancing adaptive capacity in the face of rising sea levels. Another key aspect that makes it unique is the daylighting and creating a natural bank for over 100 feet of creek that was previously buried culvert, and allowing for fresh water to flow across the shoreface. This not only restores the natural hydrological process but also offers the public a unique opportunity to experience the dynamic interactions between fluvial and coastal systems for the first time in nearly 90 years! Congratulations to the Environmental Science Associates Team!

Today we travel from the gulf coast to the east coast. The Fort Smallwood Park Shoreline Enhancement Project in Pasadena, Maryland, a 2024 Best Restored Shores award, utilizes an array of shoreline enhancement techniques that were appropriately suited to the site conditions and project goals. Project goals such as increased resiliency, recreation and environmental uplift are often a challenge to balance. Maximizing the benefits of one project feature will often restrict achieving another. This project achieved all project goals by implementing the appropriate technique (living shoreline, revetment, beach nourishment) where site conditions and park use were viable. The Fort Smallwood Park Shoreline Enhancement project embodies the notion that many different objectives, even those that are often conflicting, can be implemented through holistic planning, thorough and expert design, careful construction and continuous coordination. This project was featured on the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of ASBPA webinar by Anna Johnson of BayLand Consultants & Designers, Inc. just last week. Congratulations to the Fort Smallwood Park Shoreline Enhancement Project team! #asbpa #bestrestoredshores #coastalresilience #naturebasedsolutions

We proudly recognize the Dollar Bay Marsh Restoration project, a 2024 Best Restored Shores award recipient. The Dollar Bay Marsh Restoration fully embodies a successful habitat restoration project from beginning to end. The Galveston Bay Foundation and their project partners recognized significant funding was going to become available to the Texas coast from RESTORE, GOMESA, and other sources. As a result, the GBF began using partnerships to start the design and permitting of several projects in the Galveston Bay watershed. The Dollar Bay project was one of the first projects implemented with GOMESA funds by the Texas General Land office. Since implementation, the site has become nearly fully vegetated and serves as a nursery for juvenile fish, crabs, and other fauna. The nursery then supports a number of other species and has revitalized the ecosystem in this part of the bay. Congratulations Galveston Bay Foundation! #asbpa #bestrestoredshores #coastalresilience #naturebasedsolutions

Congratulations to SmithGroup’s #Waterfront group and the entire project team on receiving a Best Restored Beach award for the Illinois Beach State Park Shoreline Stabilization at this week’s ASBPA American Shore and Beach Preservation Association conference in Galveston. This innovative project protects and restores 6 miles of eroding shoreline and beach along with critical park habitat and infrastructure. Kudos to the team, Michels Construction, Inc., the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and the Illinois Capital Development Board for creating a national benchmark along Lake Michigan and America’s #FreshCoast. https://lnkd.in/e82zgZKT #coastalresilience #coastalrestoration #shorelineprotection #DesignABetterFuture
