    Student at Mississippi State University

Last Friday, I had the honor of presenting my senior capstone research at the American Statistical Association - ASA AL-MS Chapter Annual Conference held at Mississippi State University. My research, entitled "Resale Revolution: a Survival Analysis of the Lifetime of Fashion Trends as Depicted in Mass Media", introduces a novel approach to trend analysis in the fashion industry. I received a second place award for the poster presentation section! This approach begins with web-scraping resale websites to acquire data signifying the "death" of trends. Using natural language processing (NLP), I extract keywords from garment descriptions and titles, which are then matched against a magazine archive to track the representation of these garments in mass media. From the aggregation of the resale and magazine data, a survival analysis encapsulates lifetimes of the "dead" trends. The next phase of this research aims to develop a producer metric that quantifies the current "liveliness" of trends based on their media presence. This score can help producers make data-driven decisions on when to scale back production - promoting sustainability by reducing textile waste and enhancing profit margins. For those interested in learning more, I invite you to the final presentation of the first-ever Data Science @ Mississippi State University senior capstone cohort. Feel free to message me if you'd like to attend! Thank you to those that hosted and attended the 2025 ASA AL-MS Chapter Conference!!

Data infrastructure is under threat around the world. When people think about public goods, they most likely think of things like parks and schools. But official statistics are also a kind of public good. They help us understand housing prices, the cost of goods, the spread of disease, and more. During this episode of “Stats + Stories,” cohosts A. John Bailer and Rosemary Pennington focus on the work of official statisticians and the obstacles they face with guest Erica Groshen, senior economics adviser at the Cornell University School of Industrial and Labor Relations and research fellow at the Upjohn Institute for Employment Research. From 2013 to 2017, she served as the 14th commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the principal federal agency responsible for measuring labor market activity, working conditions, and inflation. https://lnkd.in/efGTWUQu #DataInfrastructure; #OfficialStatistics; #LaborMarket; #DataMatters; #EconomicPolicy; #PublicSectorData; #DataChallenges; #BureauOfLaborStatistics; #DataProtection; #ResearchAndPolicy; #StatisticalAnalysis

  • Celebrating Women's History Month: Growing up in a Chicago suburb, Marie Diener-West pursued biology and mathematics at Loyola University of Chicago. It wasn’t until her senior year that a physical chemistry professor suggested graduate school—a simple comment that changed her life. Hours spent in the library led her to discover biostatistics, taking her to Johns Hopkins, where she has built a distinguished career and contributed to major studies. Yet, her true passion lies in education. For more than three decades, she has taught statistical methods at Johns Hopkins, co-developing online courses. Since 2008, she has also led the Master of Public Health program, expanding her influence beyond biostatistics. Looking back, she remains grateful for the mentors, colleagues, and students who shaped her journey. https://lnkd.in/eSmtVRiD
