We may be closed on Mondays, but much is still happening behind the scenes with Anchorage Museum staff getting a primer on the recently opened exhibition “Tricksters & Sourdoughs: Humor and Identity in Alaska,” and our exhibitions team preparing to install “Frozen Forms,” a new exhibition that takes a playful look at snow and crystal geometry.

Paws on the lawn! Several of the museum staff's four-legged friends gathered for a playful meet-up on the Anchorage Museum lawn this morning, including the newest member of the pack—a curious little puppy. Watching them run, sniff, and make new friends was the perfect way to enjoy this Friday. There's always something happening here, even for our furriest visitors. #AnchorageMuseum #DogsOfAnchorage #PuppyPlaydate #MuseumMoments #FurryFriends #CommunityConnections

We’re pleased to share that the film See Us. Know Us. will be screened this Thursday evening, Sept. 26, at the Western Museum’s Association’s annual meeting in Tucson, Arizona. This project was made possible through the efforts of Anchorage Museum Atwood Resource Center archivists Julie Varee and Heather McClain with community archivists Cal Williams and Eleanor Andrews. This short-form documentary film project features the work the Anchorage Museum archives team is doing to ensure equity in its collections by telling the stories of Alaska’s often underrepresented communities. Produced by Brad Hillwig of Greatland Studios, and made possible with a grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies, the film reflects the power of collaboration and the importance of preserving our shared history. Included is a behind-the-scenes look at how the museum works with community members to create, share, and preserve these stories — and how lucky moments can help expand a collection and inspire a major exhibition. We gratefully acknowledge the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust, James Blasingame and Sharon Davies for their support in helping us tell these stories. Thank you to everyone who contributed to bringing these narratives to life. #AnchorageMuseum #AtwoodResourceCenter #WesternMuseumsConference #BloombergPhilanthropies #MJMurdockCharitableTrust #CommunityStories #Archives #GreatlandStudios

On this episode of Chatter Marks, a podcast of the Anchorage Museum, host Cody Liska sits down with Laine Welch. Welch has been reporting on the Alaska fishing industry for 36 years. Now, in retirement, she’s free to speak frankly about the state of Alaska's seafood industry, including the lawful waste of seafood caused by bycatch. Hear the full interview, now available wherever you listen.

“I've been taught to see everything that we harvest from the land as gifts that we get to gather. We are given these gifts dependent on how we treat the land and live in reciprocity to the wildlife and wild beings we share it with." - Erin Ggaadimits Ivalu Gingrich (@ivalumin) 'Gifts from the Land: Alaska Native Foodways,' is a film by Hanna Craig (@hcraigster), who talks with Alaska Native artists and culture bearers Erin Ggaadimits Ivalu Gingrich, Joni Kitmiiq Spiess, and Robert Ahmasuk, about what it means to be able to harvest and share ancestral foods. They discuss customary and modern harvesting methods and how those seasonal activities tie them to culture. Watch in full here. The Anchorage Museum continues to host artist- and community-led conversations, residencies, installations, and exhibitions focused on ways we care for people, place, and planet. In this collaborative environment, we invite individuals and communities to consider the present and the future by examining ideas and practices of healing, wellness, listening, sustainability, care-taking, and interconnectedness. Gingrich's artwork 'Iqalukpik (Red Salmon)' is on view in the museum's Art of the North Galleries.
