  • Knee injuries are some of the most common sports injuries among young athletes and can sometimes require surgery to treat them. Unfortunately, many kids, especially those from Hispanic communities, face significant delays in getting the care they need, which can cause serious long-term consequences. Dr. Neeraj Patel, orthopedic surgeon-scientist at Lurie Children’s is working to change this through his recent research grant, which aims to understand how delays to care occur and better get young athletes the timely care they need. • In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, Lurie Children’s recognizes the road ahead to providing equitable care to the diverse communities of Chicago. One way Lurie Children’s invests in a diverse workforce and meets the needs of its communities is through its Mentorship and Workforce Development Programs. This summer, over 150 students from Chicago Public Schools were introduced to careers within healthcare through various programs built for students from high school through undergraduate & graduate degrees. Lurie Children’s has been helping students from underserved communities discover the career possibilities within healthcare since 2001 and has evolved to serve public schools and universities throughout Chicago. “What warms my heart is to see that we’re giving students exposure into careers that they may have not thought existed,” said Maria Rivera, director of the workforce development program. “These are students who, had we not exposed them, likely wouldn’t have gone into one of these careers or even into healthcare.” Lurie Children’s appreciates its Mentorship and Workforce Development Program team and their contributions toward supporting the Hispanic communities and the public health of Chicago. Learn more about the workforce development program at Lurie Children’s: https://lnkd.in/g2WwPB8B.

  • Today we celebrate Emergency Nurses Day and all our incredible ED nurses who provide compassionate, high-quality care to patients and families in some of their most critical moments. We’re especially proud to recognize those who have dedicated their careers not only to this field but to the Lurie Children’s mission, and have been caring for patients here for more than 20 years! Many have held several different positions throughout their time, each pushing them to hone new skills and growing them into the leaders they are today. Thank you, to nurses like Annie Quinn, Kim Denicolo, Kim Martin, Steve Urban, and so many others, for the remarkable impact you’ve had on the Chicago community and your time, energy and tenacity over the years.   We asked these veteran nurses to reflect on their time so far in the pediatric ED and here’s what they shared:   “I have learned so many things at Lurie Children’s and Children’s Memorial, both technically and how to care for kids as a whole person, and attempt to provide care guided by the mission and vision of our organization. I have learned that children of all ages are resilient and to never accept things as routinely normal because changes happen so quickly. It’s been my pleasure to make a difference in the lives of children and their families in so many ways. It’s been great being a valued member of the team and then a resource to others whenever possible.” – Steve Urban, RN, 31 years at Lurie Children’s   “I have been a pediatric nurse since I graduated in 1988 and just love that population. I enjoy working in the pediatric emergency room because I’m not only taking care of the patient but the entire family. Knowing that I can make a difference in one patient or family’s life makes it all worth it. Our ER team is exceptional, and it makes me want to come work with my ‘family.’”– Annie Quinn, RN, 26 years at Lurie Children’s   “What we do at Lurie is so important and it is our responsibility to provide exceptional care to every patient and family. I enjoy that there is always something to learn and improve. I love watching others coach and learn from each other,” – Kim Denicolo, RN, 25 years at Lurie Children’s

  • Today we applaud Lurie Children’s renowned leader of the Division of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Dr. Arun Gosain. Currently the President of the American Association of Plastic Surgeons, in September he also became President of the American Academy of Pediatric Plastic Surgeons. At the same time, he was recognized with the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons. An internationally known lecturer and mentor, Dr. Gosain is an expert in treating craniofacial and vascular anomalies, reanimation for facial paralysis and the correction of cleft lip and cleft palate. A leader in research, Dr. Gosain also helms the Gosain Plastic Surgery and Craniofacial Biology Laboratory, examining mechanisms by which to improve the outcomes of tissue expansion in children and in patients who suffer from tissue compromise, in addition to exploring how tissue deformation impacts cell responsiveness. Bravo, Dr. Gosain! Hear Dr. Gosain explain his approach to comprehensive cleft lip and palate care in this episode of Lurie Children’s Precision podcast: https://lnkd.in/grvKfZ_d

  • Please join us in congratulating Dr. Elizabeth Alpern on her recent endowment – named the George M. Eisenberg Professor of Pediatrics. Dr. Alpern is the Division Head of Emergency Medicine and the Vice Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at Lurie Children’s and Northwestern University - The Feinberg School of Medicine. Dr. Alpern's research expertise lies in the use of large databases within research networks to improve the quality and equity of emergent care delivered to children through application of evidence-based work. A named and endowed professorship represents the highest honor a university can bestow upon its faculty. We’re thrilled for this honor Dr. Alpern has received and for the continued success she will have at Lurie Children’s and the Feinberg School of Medicine.

Study finds that nearly three out of four #children in Chicago had no swim lessons during the #pandemic, with 85% Black and 82% Hispanic kids disproportionately impacted. Michelle Macy, MD, MS, emphasized the need for a targeted outreach and expanded programs that offer swimming lessons to older elementary and middle school age kids as a way to address the gaps. https://lnkd.in/gC5vS_au Ann & Robert H. • Today is a difficult day for many, in our families, communities, and across the globe. And while it can be overwhelming to reflect on events that continue to impact us deeply, it’s important to remember a simple action we can take inside our homes during periods of crisis: connect with our children about conflicts they see happening around them and make space for their range of feelings and reactions. In the blog below, Lurie Children’s mental health experts offer guidance on how to navigate conversations around tragedies, leading with empathy and kindness, and why they are necessary during these times. https://lnkd.in/gdJcJjz3

  • Today on October 4, we recognize TEN-4 Day, a movement to raise awareness about child abuse. TEN-4-FACESp is an acronym to help medical professionals identify bruising patterns in children under 4 years of age that may be more likely due to physical abuse than accidental injury. TEN-4-FACESp is a clinical decision rule developed and validated by Lurie Children's Emergency Medicine Physician Dr. Mary Clyde Pierce and colleagues, and has since been adopted by states across the country. The rule focuses on bruises to the torso, ears and neck (TEN), and the frenulum (the tissue that runs in a thin line between the lips and gums), angle of the jaw, cheeks, eyelids and subconjunctivae (the white part of the eyes), – the FACES. The number 4 represents infants 4 months and younger with any bruise, anywhere, and “p” represents the presence of patterned bruising. The tool is to help highlight areas that are more prone to physical abuse, if there is not a good history or mechanism to explain the injury. In 2023, Lurie Children’s launched an app called LCAST (Lurie Children's Child Injury Plausibility Assessment Support Tool), the brainchild of Dr. Mary Clyde Pierce and Sr. Research Scientist Kim Kaczor, who developed it in partnership with Slingshot and BioDigital. LCAST utilizes distinguishing characteristics of bruising to aid evidence-based decision making. It is in no way meant to supplant judgment. Importantly, LCAST cannot be used to diagnose abuse, but rather functions as a screening tool to help identify red flags for abuse that may call for further evaluation.
