  • Advocate South Suburban Hospital volunteer Ken Peterson has spent the past 13 years working five days a week in supply chain. Recently, his South Suburban family surprised him with a celebration for his 90th birthday. “I was very surprised,” Ken recalls. “It made me happy knowing people really are thinking about me and appreciate me.” Ken enjoys working each day putting stock away. He says his favorite thing about his role is working with different people over the course of his time as an Advocate volunteer. Despite celebrating his 90th birthday, Ken has no plans to retire any time soon. “My doctor said if I keep doing what I do now, I can last 10 more years. Then I can retire for real.”

  • Leah, Nurse of the Year at Advocate Condell Medical Center, serves as an assistant clinical manager. As a charge nurse, Leah effectively manages crises and collaborates with various departments to ensure the best care for her patients. Her leadership is evident as she successfully improved pain reassessment charting through persistence and innovative planning. Leah advocates for professional growth among her peers, introducing educational classes like "Bundle Birth" and "Spinning Babies" to enhance labor processes, and has developed tools that promote patient safety. In addition to her clinical expertise, Leah provides compassionate care to women experiencing the loss of a baby as co-chair of the Perinatal Bereavement Committee. She has created resources for nurses, organized remembrance ceremonies and ongoing support to grieving families. “As a helper, I always knew I wanted to be in health care, but it took me several years to realize my calling was nursing. During nursing school, I realized women’s health was where my passion was, and I knew I wanted to care for birthing people. I'm continually inspired by the miracle of birth and life, as well as the resilience of those who experience the greatest loss. I love that nursing is ever evolving and the possibilities of what to be when you grow up are endless.”

  • Meet Julie Kane — director of Quality & Regulatory at Advocate Sherman Hospital. Julie shares how she makes hard work enjoyable and fosters an environment where everyone can succeed: “As the director of Quality & Regulatory, my primary responsibility is guiding others to implement changes that ensure our patients receive the high-quality care they deserve. While this can be challenging, I believe in making the hard work enjoyable, which is why I’ve dubbed myself the "Director of Fun." It’s not unusual to spot me around the organization in costumes, bringing some levity to the important work we do. I attribute my professional success to the mentors who have supported and guided me throughout my journey. The phrase ‘culture eats strategy for breakfast’ serves as a reminder to me that my dedication to supporting others is focused on fostering an environment where everyone can succeed.”
