Thank you to everyone who joined us for our event on Wednesday! We had a great lineup of speakers to discuss policy solutions to drug shortages. The federal government is prioritizing this policy issue through cross-cutting Department of Health and Human Services collaborations, and speakers noted the promise of recently proposed demand-side reforms to prevent drug shortages—though, some work remains to ensure the reforms have their intended effect. Panelists also highlighted the need for holistic supply chain assessments that can be used to inform purchasing decisions, along with a need for supply-side investments to enable manufacturing infrastructure upgrades and adoption of advanced manufacturing technologies. If you missed the event or would like to review the content, a recording and slide deck are available here: https://duke.is/c/sasg (One additional speaker is not pictured below: Meena Seshamani)

Yesterday, Gerren McHam from the API Innovation Center participated in a panel discussion on implementing policy to prevent drug shortages, building on our collaborative work with the Duke-Margolis ReVAMP Drug Supply Chain Consortium. This event brought together consortium members and industry leaders in discussions on increasing supply chain reliability and reducing the frequency and severity of drug shortages. The panel, “Enabling Reliability through Advanced Manufacturing Technologies,” included Mark Godfrey from Eli Lilly and Company, Andrew J. Carpenter, Ph.D., from Phlow, and Joel Welch from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and was moderated by Gerrit Hamre from the Duke-Margolis Institute for Health Policy. They discussed existing federal programs that can drive increased adoption of advanced manufacturing technologies (AMTs) and opportunities for leveraging AMTs for improvements in reliability, quality assurance, and national health security. During the panel, we shared our success story of developing Lomustine API with AMTs and how we will continue to invest in advanced technologies to drive reliability in the supply chain. We're committed to advancing these initiatives to ensure a more reliable and secure pharmaceutical supply chain for all. Thank you to Betsy Baer, US Pharmacopeia, for these photos! #AdvancedManufacturingTechnologies #SupplyChainResilience

The government’s investments into generic drugs and APIs have created an air of excitement surrounding the westward migration of manufacturing. Now comes arguably the most vital phase of U.S. domestic manufacturing efforts — figuring out where to get the most lasting bang for our reshoring bucks. With the pandemic finally in our rearview, the U.S. has what many industry insiders see as a golden opportunity to candidly assess pharma’s reshoring progress — and create a more formal plan for supply chain resilience.
