Creating a safer world through the prevention of infection.
About us
The Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) is the leading professional association for infection preventionists (IPs) with more than 15,000 members. Our mission is to create a safer world through the prevention of infection. This is achieved by the provision of better care to promote better health at a lower cost. Many IPs are employed within healthcare institutions and also serve as educators, researchers, consultants, and clinical scientists. The majority of APIC members are affiliated with acute care settings. An increasing number practice in ambulatory and outpatient services where they direct programs that protect patients and personnel from HAIs. Members are also involved in long-term care, home health, and other practice settings where infection prevention and control is an increasing area of responsibility for nurses and other healthcare personnel.

Huge news for hospitals!!!! New APIC study published in American Journal of Infection Control (AJIC) finds that inadequate infection prevention and control staffing levels in hospitals are associated with higher rates of healthcare-associated infections (HAI). Hospital leaders: It's time to retire the 1 Infection Preventionist per bed staffing ratios and adopt use of APIC's IP staffing calculator was utilized to accurately assess IP staffing levels: https://lnkd.in/eYxnyfk3. If you're not adequately staffed, it's time to add IPs. Standards bodies: It's time to mandate the use of the APIC IP staffing calculator and require hospitals to follow its staffing recommendations. The data is clear, inadequate IP staffing puts patients at risks for HAIs. Our industry is committed to the highest standards for safety and cleanliness of reusable textiles that hospitals and other healthcare providers depend on every day. As we explain in a recent white paper on reducing the risk of infection in healthcare, https://lnkd.in/enHFcRgE each laundry facility with the Hygienically Clean Healthcare Certification must undergo rigorous and continuous microbiological testing. They must also implement best practices during each step of the laundry process that align with ISO standards and controls, including handling, sorting, water temperature, chemical formulations, water extraction, packaging and delivery. It’s because of our strong commitment to safety and cleanliness that hygienically clean reusable textiles provide healthcare workers and patients critical protection against dangerous pathogens. And it’s why TRSA | Association for Linen, Uniform and Facility Services Industry and our members are proud to support #IIPW and will continue to do our part to move the needle on infection prevention.
