Happy International Great ShakeOut Day! International ShakeOut Day is an annual worldwide earthquake drill held in mid-October. This year, it will occur at 10:17 AM on 10/17. Archbright has participated in the Great ShakeOut for many years and continues to encourage employees to engage in a way that suits their needs while prioritizing safety. This optional self-guided drill offers a great chance to consider or practice your response if an earthquake strikes right now. Take a moment to assess your surroundings—where would you go? What actions should you take? Is there anything that could fall and cause injury or block your exit? Are others nearby, and do they know how to respond during an earthquake? How To Participate While the national drill is at a specific time, you can participate anytime on your own when convenient. Consider watching this video—https://hubs.ly/Q02TRwc90 and then take 1-2 minutes to Drop, Cover, and Hold on. After practice, take a few moments to evaluate your location and determine if anything could fall and hurt you during a real earthquake. Should furniture or equipment be strapped or secured to prevent tipping or falling? Where would you go if you needed to evacuate your space after the shaking stopped? Pick a location away from power lines and moving traffic if possible. Communicate this meeting spot to other household members. What to Do During an Earthquake If you are inside a building, move no more than a few steps, then: • DROP to the ground (before the earthquake drops you!); • Take COVER by getting under a sturdy desk or table; and • HOLD ON to it until the shaking stops. Stay indoors until the shaking stops, and you are sure it is safe to exit. • If you are in a low-lying coastal area, immediately move inland to higher ground because a tsunami could follow the earthquake. Do not return until local officials announce it is safe to reenter coastal regions. • If you are outdoors when the shaking starts, you should find a clear spot away from buildings, trees, streetlights, and power lines, then Drop, Cover, and Hold On. Stay there until the shaking stops. • If you are driving, pull over to an uncovered area, stop, and stay there with your seatbelt fastened until the shaking stops. Once the shaking stops, proceed with caution and avoid bridges or ramps that might be damaged.
