During the Shipyard scene in Episode 2 of Ahsoka Toil and Trouble, Safari Sosebee who was supervising the virtual art department, worked with Eric Steelburg (also DP on Juno 😌), he was the cinematographer on this and needed to understand the path of action, the path before was created by Doug Chiang in the very early conceptual stages, and it needed some fleshing out so that it was shootable, since it's a long traveling shot. We ended up with a very simple travel path, something that allowed for the action to take place and the camera to move around. For this virtual set we used submarine factory 3d models to fill in the background, the submarine factories have these amazing supports to hold up the submarines, and that's what you see in this image holding up the space-ships, it worked great as a design element. This went through a lot of scale iterations, from large (one ship), very large (dozens of ships), to very small (just parts, no ships). The office that they go to above them, where they look down at the shipyard, also went through a lot of design work to find scale and shape Fun-fact, there's parts of the star destroyer in there to fill in details. We worked on this for around 3 months off and on, balancing other sets as well. We hosted 5 virtual location scouts with the production designer Andrew Jones, Director of Photography Eric Steelburg, Director Steph Greene, producers and other invitees. Ahsoka has 6 directors total, each with their own approach which was an interesting challenge to tackle. Hi everyone! Wanted to share Part 1 of 2 answering a common question: Is Virtual Production (VP) right for your project? This article offers an overview of VP, and goes into its applications. Next I'll share Part 2, diving into the technical aspects of the process, pros and cons. Looking forward to your thoughts and feedback! Remember, there's no one-size-fits-all, but I'm here to share what I've learned, and continue learning though my own experience and my teams. Have a good day. #VirtualProduction #Filmmaking #DigitalProduction #ICVFX #Visualization #VirtualArtDepartment #VFXCommunity Unreal Engine #unrealengine

Finding the story and shots within an Unreal Engine environment, is part of what Safari Sosebee talks about during this clip, while he points out some of the process in The Mandalorian Season 02. Safari worked with key creatives including Jon Favreau (executive producer), Andrew Jones (production designer), and Baz Iodine (cinematographer), providing them with virtual locations for them to play in. Guided by concept art, we created a virtual representation of their script's locations using Unreal Engine. Locations mostly for LED Screen shoots, but also included some on-locatoin shoot planning as well. This was the first time we introduced Multi-user VR Scouting on to a production, (before it was just singular - VR scouting) allowing the team to meetup virtually in VR headsets, which proved to be incredibly valuable. They'd meet virtually in a location, but we're still bumping knees out of the office. This experience prepared us for our next project, Black Adam. Have a great day everyone. - Narwhal Studios Virtual Production: Is It the Right Choice for Your Project? The term "metaverse" has recently been taking a hit in popular culture but, behind the scenes, the metaverse has been developing in many industries – including the film industry. Felix Jorge, CEO and Co-Founder of Narwhal Studios, spoke with TechRadar to discuss how virtual production, and Unreal Engine, is creating a technical metaverse to support, and accelerate, the film industry. Jorge explains that virtual production allows filmmakers to “build the world and find shots in the world they’re creating" and, by placing actors directly "in the game engine" it allows re-use of content without changing it. The potential for the virtual environments used in films such as the ones Narwhal Studios creates, including Ahsoka and The Book of Boba Fett, extend beyond re-using the environments in-house – but also open up the potential for Unreal Engine assets, and associated IP, to be easily licensed for use to many other experiences. Additionally, the need for high-quality assets to develop these worlds will continue to grow as virtual production becomes more accessible – opening up a new world for Creators of virtual environments to collaborate in building the future of filmmaking. Ahsoka, Narwhal Studios' 7th major Star Wars project, challenged our Virtual Art Department to meticulously craft virtual environments that closely mirrored the final pixel result, emphasizing the need for precision and attention to detail. Drawing on the experience of our VAD supervisor from The Mandalorian Season 3, we were able to seamlessly introduce the new team of production designers, DP’s, and directors to our virtual scouting workflow. The onboarding sessions were thorough, ensuring alignment between the VAD team and key creatives with the production process. In meeting the client's expectations, our focus required dedicated effort in lighting, with an emphasis on prioritizing asset development. Accommodating changes in virtual set design and ICVFX projects posed challenges, met with an early, thorough exploration of the set's look and a strategic soft cutoff point. The VAD team's adaptability allowed us to quickly move past the initial blockout phase, reaching the polishing stage efficiently. Collaborating with key creatives, including production designer Andrew Jones, director Dave Filoni, Jon Favreau, Industrial Light and Magic, and others, underscored a strategic approach, balancing creativity with the project's timeline. So proud of every artist and team member who worked on this project. We hope you enjoy our breakdown case study showcasing the environments evolutions from Narwhals Virtual Art Department sets, to the final scenes. https://lnkd.in/exsm-yKw #VirtualProduction #FilmMaking #NarwhalStudios #Ahsoka #lucasfilm #virtualartdepartment #vad #unrealengine #ue5 Felix Jorge Safari Sosebee Arctic7

Helping storytellers and studios bring ideas to life through creative direction, virtual production, strategy, and education.

In "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania," we at Narwhal Studios took on the challenge of deploying the virtual production, during the pandemic, for remote teams. It started with the PrePre stage, where we broke down the script and deployed #Perforce, the revision control software, while concept art was being developed alongside it. Then, in the design stage, we designed physical and virtual sets out of Unreal Engine. During the planning stage, we sent #PC's and #VR headsets to teams across London, LA, and Hawaii, and we had location scout meetings virtually, to refine the story and develop the film sets. This led to the physical construction, final pixel and #VFX teams using blueprints created directly by the filmmakers. During the planning stage, the real-time team is considering methodologies to execute shots, from backlot, to LED, or on-location shoots. Finally, in post-production, it goes into editorial, and VFX. This process was a big leap for us in virtual production, introducing well-known filmmakers to a remote real-time workflows, was truly an honor. Looking forward to sharing visuals in the coming months. #VirtualProduction #AntManAndTheWaspQuantumania #VFX #RemoteCollaboration #VRScouting #Behindthescenes
