Secretary of State Henry Kissinger extends his visit to North Dakota to visit the Safeguard Complex at Nekoma (Perimeter Acquisition Radar), July 25, 1974. During his 4.5-hour visit accompanied by North Dakota Senator Milton Young (R-ND), he was briefed on the system and received a demonstration of live satellite and simulated threat tracking. West German Foreign Minister Hans Dietrich Genscher, the first foreign minister to visit the site, was also among the delegation. The tour began at Grand Forks Air Force Base to discuss innovations in nuclear weapons and a tour of the Minuteman silo training facility and a B-52 bomber. In the following press conference, Kissinger described the ABM site as “the Strength of America” adding he “was very impressed with what he saw.” #TBT

The Safeguard Ballistic Missile Defense System completes two tests at the Kwajalein Missile Range, July 18, 1974. In test M2-46, the capability of the Missile Site Radar and its data processor to acquire, discriminate and track targets from an intercontinental ballistic missile were evaluated. This launch of a Minuteman ICBM from Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, to the KMR was the first to include an unstable or tumbling reentry vehicle among the objects to be assessed and tracked, and the MSR performed successfully acquiring and tracking the targets. M2-46 was the 37th test in the second system that had begun in 1971, 34 of which were successful. That same day, the command conducted TRM-133 a subsystem test for the Spartan missile. This particular test focused upon the production motors and the improved motor cases. It also featured a stressing factor for the interceptor as the predicted target position was shifted several thousands of feet to assess its ability to reposition itself and achieve a suitable trajectory. All test objectives were achieved. #TBT
