Giving a visual voice to incarcerated artists.

About us

Art From the Inside creates the opportunity for incarcerated artists to have a visual voice through engaging, community-centered exhibitions of their art. Our vision is to empower incarcerated artists to experience personal transformation and restoration. We believe art provides the space to imagine new ways of being and to recognize our personal and collective power to change. The hope for the project is to connect us to our shared humanity, to examine the effects of the criminal justice system, and to inspire actions that support racial and economic justice. As incarcerated artist C. B. puts it, “By giving the incarcerated artists a platform, we encourage redemption narratives and a public belief in second chances.”

We are thrilled to invite you to the Community Reception for the exhibition of artwork created by the talented youth of the Justice Re-Imagined Youth Fellowship 2024. This fellowship, organized by Art from the Inside (AFTI), showcases the artistic expressions and visions of young people who have been impacted by the criminal justice system. Event Details: Date: Wednesday, July 17th, 2024 Time: 5:00 - 7:00 PM Venue: George Latimer Central Library, Downtown Saint Paul, MN - 90 West 4th Street Saint Paul, MN 55102 Light refreshments will be served. For the past five years, AFTI has exhibited the artwork of men and women within the Minnesota corrections system. Now, through the generous support of the Cultural Star Grant, we are excited to give a voice to youth affected by the criminal justice system. This first year of our fellowship featured 12 youth, ages 14-19, who attended 4 intensive workshops held at the Black Youth Healing Arts Center for four Saturdays. They engaged with art and legendary local artists to explore the power of art! This community exhibition will feature their creative works that honor their experiences and reimagines community safety and justice. We have been honored to have legendary local artists Ta-coumba T. Aiken, T. Mychael Rambo, and Willard Malebear work with our young artists, providing mentorship and inspiration. The exhibition will not only display the incredible artwork produced by these young individuals but also highlight their unique stories and perspectives. Will you join us for this community reception and exhibition?  Please RSVP here: https://lnkd.in/gMGcMa8c Can't make it to the opening? EXHIBITION RUNS July 9 - July 31, 2024

Applications are now being accepted for the Justice Re-Imagined Youth Fellowship 2024! The Justice Re-Imagined Youth Fellowship is sponsored by Art From the Inside (AFTI) and in association with Black Youth Healing Arts Center. For the past five years, AFTI exhibited the artwork of men and women in the Minnesota corrections system, some of them incarcerated as youth. We are grateful to have the chance to meet the children, parents, families and friends of our artists by doing this work. They have a unique story to share. Through funding by the Cultural Star Grant, we will give a voice to youth impacted by the criminal justice system. We are seeking 15 youth, ages 14-19 years of age, who have experienced incarceration themselves or have a family member who is currently or formerly incarcerated. Fellows who complete the fellowship will be paid a stipend of $250. Youth must also allow their works to be displayed for the community in a July 2024 exhibition at the Central Library in downtown Saint Paul. Students under 18 who are selected to participate will need to have a parent or legal guardian complete a permission form in order to participate. Please share with youth! So proud of Art from the Inside MN and our artists. Thank you to JENNIFER MARX and Lux Thunberg for sharing their reflections about Inside & Out: The Humanities and Mass Incarceration, a national convening they attended in Chicago that brought together humanities councils, community members, and organizers to share, connect, and consider the role of the humanities in mass incarceration. With gratitude to the Minnesota Humanities Center for inviting us to be at this table and to the Illinois Humanities for hosting this powerful convening.
