Hurricane Helene has caused catastrophic damage across western North Carolina, claiming lives and leaving millions devastated as homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure are destroyed. Roads, bridges, and communication systems have been severely impacted, making recovery even more challenging. At the Arts & Science Council (ASC), we stand in solidarity with our neighbors in WNC and our fellow artists and cultural organizations affected by this tragedy. In partnership with government agencies and nonprofits, Arts North Carolina is working to assess the full scope of the damage and provide relief and recovery support in the weeks and months to come. We urge our community to contribute to the NC Arts Disaster Relief Fund, organized by the North Carolina Arts Foundation. We're excited that ASC has officially joined forces with the Foundation for the Carolinas (FFTC) to strengthen our commitment to creating a sustainable and inclusive cultural ecosystem for Charlotte-Mecklenburg! As part of this partnership, ASC will continue to steward funding from the City and County to support arts, culture, and science organizations in our community. ASC will also continue to serve as an advocate, resource hub, and funder for local organizations, individual artists, cultural education, and festivals. While this funding is a crucial step forward, it’s just one piece of the puzzle. To truly nurture our creative ecosystem, community support through donations remains essential. Your contributions and continued support allow us to expand our reach, foster innovation, and ensure equitable access to culture for all. Together, we can continue building a vibrant, thriving community!

It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of our beloved colleague and friend, Shameeka Henderson. Shameeka served at the Arts & Science Council for over 25 years and rose through the organization as the Director of Database Management. She was the heartbeat of the ASC. Shameeka’s passion for her work, her dedication to our mission, and her unwavering commitment to the community were truly unmatched.   Shameeka was a passionate advocate for ASC, sharing community events, grant opportunities, and artist calls with her network. Her work ensured we had the data and technology to tell our story and connect with donors and community members, allowing us to continue our mission and serve the residents of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County. She believed in ASC’s role as community builders and cultural advocates and was especially excited about continuing to build trust and sustainability through transparency and collaboration.   Her selflessness, dedication, warmth, and problem-solving spirit will be deeply missed, but her legacy will live on in the work we continue to do. Her contributions have left a lasting impact, and her presence will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Our hearts go out to her family, friends, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing Shameeka. Last week, we celebrated the ribbon cutting of the Torrence Trib II Greenway in Huntersville, along with Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation and Huntersville Parks and Recreation. The daughter of Greek immigrants, Constance Tina Heracklis’ parents instilled a love of learning in her. “My parents’ lack of education and their pursuit of us having the best education possible drove me to become a teacher,” said Heracklis, science teacher at Gaston Day School. Now, the 28-year teaching veteran and 2024 ASC Cato Excellence in Teaching Award recipient shows the same dedication to her students. “…I can tell them I care,” she said. “I explain to [the students] that education is the way to overcome some of the circumstances they find themselves in.” Her constant message to her students: Be the best you can be.
