About us
ASC is a non-profit Local Arts Agency dedicated to holistically nurturing and sustaining Charlotte-Mecklenburg's cultural ecosystem. We serve as the designated “Office of Cultural Resources” for the City of Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, and six suburban towns. We act as a FUNDER and fundraiser, providing a huge number of grants, public art, culture blocks, and financial resources to our community. We also act as a RESOURCE and ADVOCATE providing cultural education programs, workshops, trainings, cultural planning, and local advocacy for the arts and sciences. We combine vital philanthropic support from individuals, corporations and foundations with resources from local and state government to maximize community impact throughout the cultural sector. By investing in arts and culture, we drive economic growth, foster community retention, support local creatives, and enhance the quality of life for all residents. Our initiatives dismantle barriers and support the upward mobility of our community. ASC’s three-pronged approach is dismantling barriers and creating diverse, self-sustaining communities that invest in the upward mobility of its people and organizations. 1. Community Engagement: ASC fosters diverse, self-sustaining communities crucial to Charlotte's cultural and economic growth. 2. Support for Creatives: ASC supports local artists with resources, opportunities, and platforms to advance their careers. 3. Educational Enrichment: ASC enhances education in Charlotte-Mecklenburg by integrating arts and sciences to inspire creativity and critical thinking in students. 4. Cultural Identity: ASC invests in arts to foster creativity, inclusivity, and cultural pride, positioning Charlotte as a leading cultural hub. 5. Economic Development: ASC drives economic vitality in Charlotte by leveraging arts and culture to attract tourists, retain residents, and stimulate local businesses.

The daughter of Greek immigrants, Constance Tina Heracklis’ parents instilled a love of learning in her. “My parents’ lack of education and their pursuit of us having the best education possible drove me to become a teacher,” said Heracklis, science teacher at Gaston Day School. Now, the 28-year teaching veteran and 2024 ASC Cato Excellence in Teaching Award recipient shows the same dedication to her students. “…I can tell them I care,” she said. “I explain to [the students] that education is the way to overcome some of the circumstances they find themselves in.” Her constant message to her students: Be the best you can be.
