Still on a high from spending the last two days with the inaugural ISTE ASCD #GenerationAI fellows, hosted at the Google offices in Chicago 🌬️! Made possible by the generosity of Google.org, nearly 100 educators from 38 states gathered to start a 15-month deep dive focused on using AI for transformational learning. They are certainly the most diverse AI educator group we have convened to date (intentionally, of course!). We have urban and rural leaders, those in their first year all the way to those in their 30th+ year in the profession, superintendents, librarians, ed tech directors, instructional leaders, classroom teachers, chief academic officers, CIOs, even an elementary school PE teacher from the Bronx! More than 75% are from Title I eligible schools and collectively they reflect the wonderfully diverse demographics of our country. We need **everyone** at this table if we are going to get it right! I spoke about 5 frames we need to bring to the AI conversation that I feel like need to be top of mind when considering AI in schools. Each offers both challenges and opportunities: 🖼️ Equity/Fairness -- How can we make sure those furthest from opportunity benefit as much as those with more access, power and privilege? 🖼️ Values -- How can we ensure that our values lead the work rather than the "default" values of the technology itself which may or may not reflect our own? 🖼️ Professional Learning -- Deploying technology is straightforward. Preparing educators to use it effectively is not. How can we make sure our staff is prepared and confident to lead and learn alongside our students as the technology changes every week (sometimes every day)? 🖼️ Quality over Efficiency -- I love the efficiencies that AI can bring to the classroom for both educators and students. But doing things faster that we probably should have abandoned long ago doesn't get us or our students where we need to be. How can we ensure that we attend to efficacy over speed? 🖼️ Transformational Learning -- In the end, if we use a transformational technology to power incremental improvements to learning, it's like driving a 🚀 rocketship down a 🚗 freeway. You can do it, but should you be doing it? That is why we centered our exploration of the power of AI on the ISTE ASCD Transformational Learning Principles. Participants told us how much they appreciated not be bombarded by AI tools (for a change) when talking about AI in education. This is just the beginning of our work to reach 200,000 educators with the support they need to reimagine learning for a connected world. Special thanks to Tara N. Jessica Garner Nadia Selim for leading this work and to our amazing facilitators Heather Hurley Jeremiah Okal-Frink and Bethany Rayl. Always wonderful to learn from Jennie Magiera from Google Education, too! Nicole Brenner Maab Ibrahim Maggie Johnson Kimberly L.
