Officials in Martin County, NC, have been both strategic and relentless in their efforts to resurrect Martin General Hospital as a Rural Emergency Hospital -- and we're glad to see that KFF Health News is taking notice. UnitedHealthcare has just published a list of roughly 600 procedures that no longer require prior authorization for providers with "Gold Card" status. (See Comments section for link.) As we've written previously, we think the Gold Card model offers some leverage for other providers looking to reduce the crushing burden of prior authorizations. This might be a good time to review

CMS has taken the unusual step of introducing a *mandatory* new payment model that covers about 1/4 of the US starting in 2026. For some reason, the agency never published a list of exactly which Census areas will be included, so we combed through 3,000 pages of regulatory language to get an answer.
