We Are Their Voice.

About us

The ASPCA (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) is the first animal welfare organization established in North America and serves as the nation’s leading voice for animals. The organization’s mission is to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States. The ASPCA provides local and national leadership in three key areas: protecting and rescuing animals from crisis, assisting animals in communities and advancing legal protection for animals. The ASPCA was founded by Henry Bergh in 1866 on the belief that animals are entitled to kind and respectful treatment at the hands of humans, and must be protected under the law. Headquartered in New York City, the ASPCA maintains a full-service animal hospital, spay/neuter clinic, rehabilitation center for canine victims of cruelty, kitten nursery and adoption facility. In addition, the ASPCA announced a groundbreaking anti-cruelty partnership with the New York Police Department in 2013, which has resulted in a record-breaking number of arrests and animals’ lives saved. The ASPCA also operates programs and services that extend nationwide, including a Field Investigation and Response team that rescues animal victims of natural and man-made disasters, a fully-subsidized spay/neuter clinic in Los Angeles, a Behavioral Rehabilitation Center for fearful, under-socialized dogs, and a 24-hour, 365-day Animal Poison Control Center that provides pet owners and veterinarians with live, on-call assistance related to toxic products and substances. In 2015, the ASPCA acquired Humane Alliance, the nation’s leading training and education organization focusing on high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter. The ASPCA is a privately funded 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization supported by more than 2 million animal advocates across the country.

The *nice Canadian* stereotype is hard to shake – perhaps because as Lori Bierbrier sees it, it's a wonderful way to live. Now based in Brooklyn, the Ottawa-born veterinarian and director of community medicine at the @American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), complements kindness with an openness to the richness and variety of experiences possible in New York.

When dogs fly high they find a second chance at life! That's how these 30+ pups who boarded a Subaru of America sponsored flight found their loving homes ✈️ This June, 40 dogs were flown from Mobile SPCA in Alabama, to the Laurence G. Hanscom Field in Bedford, Massachusetts, where they were then transported by ground to MSPCA-Angell Northeast Animal Shelter in Massachusetts, and New Hampshire SPCA in New Hampshire. In total 33 dogs went to the MSPCA, while seven others went to the NHSPCA. This transport opportunity was part of our Animal Relocation Program, which works with overcrowded shelters to relocate animals to other shelters with space, resources and a high demand for adoption. Many shelters like Mobile SPCA have been experiencing overcrowding, with canines specifically, and these transports help find pets loving homes and increase their capacity to help more community animals! This is what we call The #RescueEffect – a ripple effect through shelters that's created when a dog is fostered or adopted. The flight was graciously sponsored by our longtime partner Subaru! We have collaborated with Subaru for over a decade and are a national partner for the Subaru Loves Pets® program - a program where Subaru and its 600+ retailers are committed to improving the lives of as many shelter animals as possible. Today, on National Make A Dog's Day, we are happy to announce that all 33 dogs that went to MSPCA-Angell have since been adopted! Continue to celebrate with us and Subaru throughout October and encourage people across the country to consider adopting or fostering a dog in need. Our teams are still on the ground, supporting victims affected by the recent hurricanes. We’re working hard to provide the local community with a range of resources, including establishing a distribution center for pet food and supplies. A huge thank you to the The Rachael Ray Foundation™ for their generous donation, which will greatly help impacted communities and shelters 🧡 Read more about our efforts here: https://bit.ly/3NxrBHe

⭐Pet Food Distribution in North Carolina⭐ In response to the devastating impact of Hurricane Helene on communities throughout North Carolina, we launched an animal assistance hotline for residents affected by the catastrophic storm. The hotline provides information on where residents can receive free pet food and supplies and other critical information. Our pet food distribution efforts are a lifeline for many families struggling in the aftermath of the hurricane, and they are made possible in part thanks to the incredible generosity of Hill's Pet Nutrition. Your donations are helping us reach countless pets and families in need 🧡

Happy National Farmer’s Day! Today is a day to recognize the work of higher-welfare farmers and ranchers across the country 🌾 Since 2017, the ASPCA has partnered with Food Animal Concerns Trust (FACT), an organization that works to support farmers and ensure that all farm animals are raised in a more humane way, to fund a portion of their Fund-a-Farmer grants. These grants are provided to farmers who want to improve the welfare of their animals by increasing their access to pasture, achieving or maintaining a meaningful animal welfare certification, or implementing a big “systems change” project. Providing these grants is an important part of our efforts to build a more humane farming system as an alternative to cruel and unsustainable factory farming. 🚨 BREAKING UPDATE🚨 Our disaster response team has been on the ground in Florida, Georgia and North Carolina assisting round-the-clock with critical disaster relief efforts following the catastrophic and widespread destruction left in the wake of Hurricane Helene in the Southeast. While assisting locally, we are also working to ensure the safety of the ASPCA Behavioral Rehabilitation Center (BRC) staff and animals in North Carolina, and yesterday we urgently evacuated more than 30 dogs from the BRC to the ASPCA Cruelty Recovery Center in Ohio. As we remain on the ground in North Carolina, we are working at the Emergency Operations Center to coordinate with the North Carolina Department of Agriculture to establish a statewide pet supply distribution plan to support impacted communities. Our teams are also supporting the North Carolina Department of Agriculture with help coordinating with partners in Western North Carolina to determine how we can best support additional needs, including evacuating displaced homeless animals out of the disaster zone. In Georgia, our teams are also on the ground assisting with impact and needs assessments in the storm's aftermath. During emergencies like this, it’s critical that we have support from compassionate people like you. While our response to this disaster continues to evolve, we hope we can count on you. Please make an urgent gift today to support our lifesaving efforts for communities, people and pets in need 🧡 aspca.org/HurricaneHelene
