President Donald Trump’s administration is terminating grants for two clean energy projects and roughly 300 others funded by the Department of Energy are in jeopardy as the president prioritizes fossil fuels. The DOE is canceling two awards to a nonprofit clean energy think tank, RMI in Colorado, according to a document reviewed by AP. https://lnkd.in/e3FP2BK4

The race to fill a Texas congressional seat has candidates but no election date more than three weeks after Rep. Sylvester Turner’s death left a vacancy in a stronghold for Democrats, who are eager to cut into Republicans’ narrow U.S. House majority. Turner, a former Houston mayor, died March 5 just weeks into his first term in Congress. Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has the sole authority to call a special election but has not said when he might do so, drawing criticism from some Democrats who have accused him of trying to help protect the GOP’s margins. Paris Hilton's nonprofit 11:11 Media Impact and GoFundMe.org are giving 50 women-owned businesses impacted by the Eaton Fire grants of up to $25,000. The grants will help people like Barbara Shay, who lost the diner that has been in her family for a half-century, and Renata Ortega, whose floral design studio Orla Floral burned along with her home in the Altadena foothills. The Pasadena Women's Business Center will also receive $25,000 to give free coaching to impacted businesses. Director Lizzy Okoro Davidson said the center will help some entrepreneurs "reimagine" their businesses while Altadena rebuilds, and offer much needed encouragement to keep going as business owners face many years of recovery. More than 1,800 businesses were in the Eaton and Palisades fire zones, employing 9,600 people and generating $1.4 billion in annual sales. Kelly LoBianco of LA County Department of Economic Opportunity said grants like these, as well as ones the county has stood up, will be crucial in simply keeping small businesses afloat so that they can reach the longterm recovery phase. Hilton surprised some of the recipients by notifying them over Zoom, including Renata Ortega. “I really didn’t know if we were going to make it or how long we were going to make it, having to start from scratch, so this grant is really giving me hope right now at a time of uncertainty,” she said. America's craft brewers already have a lot on their minds. The phenomenal growth the industry saw in the last decade has slowed. Younger people are drinking less and moving away from beer to craft cocktails and hard seltzers. Tariffs are one more complication. They impact the aluminum used for cans, the steel used for kegs and even the barley and malt used for brewing. Here's my story for The Associated Press with Paul Wiseman: https://lnkd.in/gMzRHtmn
