The Association of Farmworker Opportunity Programs (AFOP) and its 52 member organizations serve migrant and seasonal farmworkers in 49 states and Puerto Rico. We provide job training, pesticide safety education, emergency assistance, and an advocacy voice for the people who prepare and harvest our nation’s food. All member organizations operate under the National Farmworker Jobs Program (NFJP), which is a competitive grant program of the U.S. Department of Labor. The NFJP is aimed at educating and training farmworkers into jobs that allow them to earn an income to sustain themselves and their families. Over the past eight years, more than 50,649 eligible farmworkers have received quality training and were placed in and retained good jobs with benefits, which they rarely receive from farm work. In addition to the NFJP, AFOP’s members operate a variety of programs including Head Start, migrant education, and housing counseling. AFOP's national staff also provides services and advocates for the farmworker population through its Health & Safety Programs and the Children in the Fields Campaign, headquartered in Washington, D.C. In the US, there is no vacating of federal-level criminal records for human trafficking victims. Among 467 surveyed victims, 62% reported being cited, arrested, or detained, with 71% having a criminal record. 90% of those convictions were related to their trafficking. #StopHumanTrafficking #EndHumanTrafficking

Here are some other facts: * On an average day, temperatures in the fields are 8-10°F hotter than the reported daily high from the National Weather Service. * Many cases of heat stress and heat-related illnesses are underreported due to lack of awareness, access to medical care, or fear of retaliation. * During peak production seasons, July and August, farmworkers work over 12 hours a day in temperatures that exceed 100°F. * Many workplaces do not provide shaded areas for breaks nor clean drinking water, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses * The EPA reports that Workers Compensation claims for heat-related illness among farmworkers is the highest of any occupation * Implementing heat stress prevention programs can reduce the incidence of heat-related illnesses by up to 50%. * North Carolina, Florida, Texas, Arizona and California lead the nation in heat-related fatalities among farmworkers * With rising global temperatures, the frequency and severity of heat stress incidents in agriculture are expected to increase, putting more farmworkers at risk. #nhspw #nhspw2024 #HeatStressPrevention #FarmSafety #StayCool #waterrestshade #heatstress #heatstroke #heatrelatedillness #farmworkers
