  • Sent on Behalf of Pam Ferris, AJAS Board Chair and Dr. Jeff Farber, Chair CEO Search Committee:   Ruth Katz Named New AJAS President and CEO   January 24, 2024 (ROCKVILLE, MD.) -- Ruth Katz, senior vice president for public policy at LeadingAge, has been named as the new president and CEO of the Association of Jewish Aging Services. Katz will begin her tenure at AJAS Feb. 25 during the association’s annual meeting in La Jolla, Calif.    Katz, who has been with LeadingAge since 2018, led advocacy and public policy strategy to advance the public policy agenda for aging services. The policy office works on issues related to nursing homes, affordable housing, home care, workforce, healthcare quality, managed care, elder justice and other important concerns.     Prior to joining LeadingAge, Katz served as a senior executive at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation. As associate deputy assistant secretary, she led a group that developed and conducted policy research and analysis for programs in aging, long-term care and disability working with numerous foundations and other funding partners.     “We are delighted to welcome Ruth into the AJAS family. She has outstanding credentials and a career-spanning commitment to understanding and caring for the needs of older adults,” says AJAS incoming Board Chair Dr. Jeffrey Farber, MD. “The AJAS board and staff are looking forward to working with her to generate and promote further innovations that will benefit older adults and their families.” Farber is president and CEO of The New Jewish Home in New York, N.Y.   Katz is excited about her new role. “I am honored to be joining AJAS. What a powerful group of committed providers! We all know the combination of Jewish values and nonprofit aging services is a winning ticket. AJAS members live it every day. Jewish aging services organizations provide the highest quality of care. Let’s spread the vision together. Don has set a high bar for serving AJAS members and promoting Jewish aging services organizations – he’s helped members evolve as they serve an aging population. Let’s work together to keep up the momentum.”    Additionally, Katz served as a steering committee member of the Moving Forward Coalition, chairs the American Society on Aging’s Journal Generations Editorial Board, and has served on the AARP Home and Community Based Services Chartbook Advisory Board since its inception.    Katz succeeds Donald J. Shulman, who is retiring this year after serving as AJAS president and CEO since 2012. Shulman, the 2024 recipient of the Dr. Herbert Shore Award of Honor, led the organization during a time of great transformation and growth.    AJAS represents nearly 100 non-profit organizations throughout North America that support elders and their families. For additional information please contact the AJAS offices at info@ajas.org or (202) 543 – 7500.

  • We are thrilled to announce Don Shulman as the recipient of the 2024 Dr. Herbert Shore Award of Honor! November 16, 2023 (ROCKVILLE, MD) - Donald J Shulman, president and CEO of the Association of Jewish Aging Services (AJAS), has been named the 2024 recipient of the esteemed Dr. Herbert Shore Award of Honor. Shulman will be recognized during the AJAS annual conference Feb. 25-28 in La Jolla, Calif. It is the most prestigious recognition that AJAS can bestow. Award criteria include personal and professional attributes such as dedication, integrity, commitment, and leadership as well as contributing to the success of the association. “Don Shulman is the personification of these attributes” says Warren Slavin, CEO emeritus of the Charles E. Smith Life Communities in Rockville, Md. “Having led the association for the last 12 years as its chief executive, Don has been the glue that has cemented our relationships and enabled us to better care for the residents and families we serve. I am certain Dr. Shore would be proud to see the award named in his honor given to Don.”    Shulman says he is very honored by the recognition, which serves as a capstone to a long and successful career in eldercare. He will retire in 2024. “I am beyond blessed and humbled to be named the 2024 Dr. Herbert Shore Award of Honor recipient,” Shulman says. “My position was never about getting an award. My job is to illuminate the people around me and aid them in honoring our mission. That is the true measure of one's success.”    Shulman, who joined AJAS in 2012, has led the organization devoted to serving the needs of elders during a time of great transformation and growth.
