Last week, Steven L. Miller, MBA CAE, AOPO’s CEO, visited Chapel Hill, NC, to take part in a Transplant Growth Collaborative hosted by HonorBridge, LifeNet Health, and We Are Sharing Hope SC. This event brought together OPOs and transplant centers to exchange successful practices for advancing organ recovery and transplantation to save more lives. Transplant professionals from Hackensack, VCU, and Duke were among the presenters, focusing on increasing organ utilization. AOPO remains committed to driving innovation and collaboration in the donation community to ensure every donation opportunity results in lives saved.

We support the Organ Donation Referral Improvement Act as a crucial step in enhancing the nation's organ donation system. This legislation will simplify the hospital referral process, making it easier for Organ Procurement Organizations (OPOs) to identify and authorize potential donors. Most importantly, it ensures that every potential donor has the chance to save lives. We commend Representative Rob Wittman for his leadership and dedication to advancing the cause of organ donation. This Act addresses a key gap in our current system by studying automatic donor referrals and recommending nationwide adoption. It also leverages innovative technology to foster collaboration between OPOs and hospitals. Research shows that automated referral systems lead to: ✅ Increased donor identification ✅ Timely, consistent referrals ✅ Higher donation rates ✅ Reduced nursing hours spent on donation cases As we work toward our goal of 50,000 organs transplanted in 2026, AOPO and its members remain committed to supporting legislation that strengthens OPOs’ ability to fulfill their lifesaving mission. We urge Congress to prioritize the passage of this Act to drive innovation and save more lives. Read our full statement here: https://lnkd.in/ebBjMfTB

In an open letter, over 1,100 professionals in organ donation and transplantation, patients, and donor families are raising the alarm against harmful misinformation being spread during Congressional hearings and in the media. These misleading narratives cast doubt on the integrity of the system and erode public trust, leading to a drop in organ donor registrations and endangering lives. National data from Donate Life America shows a concerning trend: 80% of states consistently reporting donor registry data are seeing fewer Americans sign up as organ donors over the last three years. The letter emphasizes: “… our nation’s organ procurement organizations (OPOs) - the non-profit, community-based organizations that work with grieving families every day to save lives through transplantation - have been subject to malicious misinformation and defamatory attacks…Ignored is the fact that there has been 13 years of consistent growth in organ donation by OPOs, leading to a record 43,000 organs transplanted and lives saved through deceased donation last year.” Read AOPO’s statement on protecting and advancing the life-saving organ donation system. Together, we can ensure accurate information is shared and continue to save lives. https://lnkd.in/e9sTPPjn

AOPO has outlined key actions for the future of organ donation and transplantation as the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSAgov), HHS moves forward with the next phase of OPTN modernization. Ensuring transparency, fostering public trust, and maximizing donor organ utilization are just some of the priorities we’re advocating for to create a more efficient and equitable system to save more lives. We applaud the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) and its $44 million investment in solving one of organ donation's most pressing challenges—organ nonuse. The "No Kidney Left Behind" initiative, led by 34 Lives at Purdue Research Foundation, will rehabilitate kidneys at high risk of non-transplantation using Normothermic Machine Perfusion (NMP) technology. This innovative approach aims to return up to 50% of medically complex kidneys to the organ supply, giving more patients on the waitlist a chance at life. As organ nonuse continues to be a significant issue, with over 8,500 kidneys not being transplanted last year, this program marks a vital step forward. We remain committed to advocating for increased organ use, working alongside our partners to maximize the potential of every donated organ. Thank you to ARPA-H, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), and all involved for driving this critical change! Read our full statement here: https://lnkd.in/erTePyM3

Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSAgov), HHS announced the awarding of several multi-million-dollar contracts to manage the U.S. organ donation and transplantation system – a historic moment as for-profit entities will now assume key roles in system oversight. AOPO urges HRSA to prioritize transplant patients and donor families in all decision-making processes. Transparency is critical, and we call on HRSA to communicate the transition plans, contractor engagement, and success metrics. The U.S. leads the world with over 43,000 organs transplanted in 2023, a result of the altruism of American organ donors, their families, and the dedication of non-profit Organ Procurement Organizations (OPOs). AOPO has long supported innovation in our field, and as we enter this new phase of OPTN Modernization, we remain committed to working with HRSA, Congress, and other stakeholders to save more lives and achieve 50,000 annual organs transplanted in 2026. Who determines death during the organ donation process? It’s a question we often hear, and the answer is clear: 𝙊𝙋𝙊𝙨 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙞𝙣𝙫𝙤𝙡𝙫𝙚𝙙 𝙞𝙣 𝙙𝙚𝙘𝙡𝙖𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙙𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙝. This responsibility belongs to independent medical professionals who follow rigorous, evidence-based criteria to determine death prior to organ donation. Swipe through to understand the facts and dispel any misconceptions about the role of OPOs. After death is declared, OPOs step in to honor the donor’s wishes and help save lives. For 13 consecutive years, organ donation in the U.S. has grown – but tragically, transplant rates have not kept up. Last year, OPOs recovered double the kidneys needed to save patients on the waitlist, yet 𝟴,𝟱𝟳𝟵 𝗸𝗶𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘆𝘀 went unused, leading to the tragic loss of 𝟯,𝟴𝟬𝟮 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀. Key facts that underscore this crisis: • Patients who died waiting for a kidney were offered a median of 16 kidneys there were ultimately transplanted into others lower on the wait list. • 62% of kidneys not used in the United States would have been successfully transplanted in France. • The nonuse rate of recovered kidneys has surged by 52% since 2016. This is not just a healthcare issue – it’s a secondary loss for donor families, whose loved ones’ generous gifts go unused. AOPO urges lawmakers and the transplant community to unite and address the barriers preventing the use of life-saving organs. It’s time to stop the waste of viable organs and save more lives. Association of Organ Procurement Organizations (AOPO) reposted this
THE MOST BRILLIANT MINDS in the field of organ donation and transplantation are here in San Diego this week! …Including (L-R) Lifesharing Exec Director and AOPO President Elect Jeff Trageser, Association for Multicultural Affairs in Transplantation (AMAT) President Ieesha Johnson and Association of Organ Procurement Organizations (AOPO) CEO Steve Miller. Professionals from all over the nation are here in America’s Finest City attending AMAT’s Annual Conference. The theme is “Empower, Engage, Elevate: Fostering an Inclusive Donation and Transplantation Community”. Our goal is simple: Saving more lives by increasing organ and tissue donation in multicultural communities. In California and many other parts of the country, patients from multicultural communities make up the majority of the transplant waiting list. By having a more diverse group of registered donors, we can potentially save more lives. . Lifesharing is a proud sponsor of AMAT’s 2024 Conference. . #empower #engage #elevate #donatelife #donevida
