This September, the Saint Louis Zoo proudly participated in the 10th anniversary celebration of the Buffalo Treaty — a symbol of cooperation, renewal, and restoration. Held on the traditional lands of the Kainai Nation in Stand Off, Alberta, Canada, the gathering brought together Nations, Tribes, and guests in a ceremony to sign the treaty. The Buffalo Treaty acknowledges the profound loss for both people and the land when bison were nearly wiped out in the 1800s. Buffalo (also known as bison), once numbered in the tens of millions across North America. As a keystone species, they were essential to prairie biodiversity and played a vital role in the culture and survival of many Indigenous peoples for thousands of years. Originally, the Treaty united 13 Indigenous Nations from eight reservations in the U.S. and Canada in an intertribal alliance to restore bison to their lands and rebuild cultural relationships with the animals. Since then, hundreds of First Nations across North America have signed the treaty. On September 25th, AZA President & CEO Dan Ashe proudly joined in signing the Buffalo Treaty on behalf of AZA, recognizing the critical role buffalo play in their ecosystems and the cultural significance they hold for the peoples who share their native habitats. In addition, Edward Spevak, Ph.D., Curator of Invertebrates at the Saint Louis Zoo and Director of the Saint Louis Zoo WildCare Institute Center for Native Pollinator Conservation, and Mollye Nardi, General Curator at the Birmingham Zoo, signed the treaty on behalf of the AZA SAFE North American Bison Program and the Saint Louis Zoo. Spevak and Nardi co-lead the AZA SAFE North American Bison Program. Learn more about the Buffalo Treaty: https://bit.ly/4f1Kxcx. #IndigenousPeoplesDay #Buffalo #Bison #ItsInOurNature

It's Fall #WorldMigratoryBirdDay! 🎉 This May, SAFE North American Songbird celebrated a major milestone by welcoming its 100th program partner, Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium! By August, the program soared to 103 partners, representing nearly a third of all AZA institutions! Why the rapid growth? Songbirds are part of our everyday lives, filling our backyards and parks with sound and color. Many #Zoos and aquariums are also key migration stopovers for these birds, with at least 94 partners listed as eBird hotspots! Plus, the program's conservation efforts offer simple, cost-effective ways for everyone to make a difference. SAFE North American Songbird focuses on protecting 319 species facing threats like habitat loss, predation by roaming cats, and collisions with buildings, which together result in billions of bird deaths annually. This SAFE species program also support the Smithsonian Bird Friendly® certified coffee program and guides #AZA partners in using platforms like iNaturalist for community #Science and bird conservation efforts. In Connect, you can learn more about SAFE's impact on protecting #Songbirds and how you can help: https://bit.ly/3Nmfc8X. #SAFESongbirds #Birds #MigratoryBirdDay #Conservation #Zoo #Aquariums

“My advice for young Black people who want to enter into a nontraditional space is to be gentle with yourself,” said Rae Wynn-Grant, PhD, the first Black woman to co-host a wildlife conservation series on network TV 📺. As one of the few prominent Black women #Wildlife ecologists, Dr. Rae has been carving a distinct path in the wildlife conservation community. 🍃 On Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom, Dr. Rae brings her engaging presence and fresh perspective to viewers of all ages and backgrounds. 🌟 Beyond the TV screen, Dr. Rae is dedicated to inspiring young people, particularly from marginalized communities, to pursue careers in #WildlifeBiology and conservation. Her love for nature was inspired by watching #Wildlife shows like Wild Kingdom as a child and nurtured by family and mentors who recognized her passion. 💚 This support gave her the confidence to pursue a path in #Ecology and conservation, earn advanced degrees in the field, and conduct groundbreaking research that established her as a leader in the community. 🌿🌎 “My role as co-host of the series isn’t just about sharing wildlife stories; it’s about showing the world that anyone, regardless of background, can be a champion for conservation,” said Dr. Rae. In her commitment to advancing diversity, Dr. Rae is not alone. Leading the way within AZA and #Conservation communities are Denise M. Verret, CEO & Zoo Director at the Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens, and Dr. Jo-Elle Mogerman, President & CEO of the Philadelphia Zoo. As we celebrate tiger cubs at the Memphis Zoo, Nashville Zoo and the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, it's important to remember why these #Births make a difference for the species. 🐯 With wild #Populations of this critically endangered species numbering fewer than 700 individuals, these #Cubs help strengthen genetic diversity in accredited facilities. Endemic to the spectacular Indonesian island of #Sumatra, the Sumatran tiger is one of the most imperiled species in the order Carnivora. They require sustained vigilance and monitoring from skilled rangers dedicated to protecting them at all costs. 📝 The tasks of these #Rangers vary from dismantling snares and destroying poacher camps to placing #Camera traps, reporting unpermitted logging, and recording animal tracks. 📸 This globally significant ranger work, regularly performed in physically demanding conditions with limited #Resources, requires extraordinary commitment and dedication. September 26 is Black-Footed Ferret Rediscovery Day! 🍃 The black-footed ferret has an important #Conservation story. A misunderstanding of the #Ecosystem that they inhabited led to a 1900s government-sponsored poisoning campaign targeting prairie dogs and supporting land conversion for cities, livestock production, and #Farming. Even though this misconception has been corrected using science-based #Management, there is still human-wildlife conflict with prairie dogs and human activities. 🦠 The introduction of a #Bacterial disease in North America has also caused devastating losses of both prairie dogs and black-footed ferret populations. AZA's SAFE Black-footed Ferret program addresses the multifaceted challenges of this species by combining scientific expertise, collaborative efforts, public engagement, and strategic resource allocation. The population has grown from the last remaining 24 rescued individuals to nearly 700! 📈 Learn more about the importance and rediscovery of the black-footed ferret: https://bit.ly/3Btkht4. #EndangeredSpecies #BlackFootedFerret #Ferret #Reintroduction #AnimalHealth #Science

Last week, we held the 2024 AZA Annual Conference at the beautiful BMO Centre in Calgary, Alberta, Canada ⛰️. Each day, attendees brought their energy, knowledge, and ideas to elevate animal care and conservation practices. We expected nothing less, because #ItsInOurNature. Were you in #Calgary? ❤️ Share your favorite moments in the comments! A big thank you to the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo and the BMO Centre staff for helping the week run smoothly with your hard work and diligence. 🎉 We've heard wonderful feedback from attendees!
