Reducing the use of aircraft engines during taxiing ✈ 🚕! Together with ACI EUROPE and operational and technical experts from across #aviation EUROCONTROL has produced a Concept of Operations (CONOPS) & Industry Guidance to save fuel and reduce emissions. The improvement of environmental performance of airports is without doubt one of the key 🌿 challenges of many, if not all, #airports. EUROCONTROL's Airport Operations Team (AOT) Sustainable Taxiing Taskforce – a forum of operational and technical stakeholders - has delivered a high-level CONOPS that includes recommendations and considerations for implementation of sustainable taxi operations. The CONOPS, based on a simplified model of taxi operations, demonstrates the environmental benefit potential to reduce fuel and emissions (in addition to improvement of Local Air Quality and noise at the apron), but also addresses possible operational improvements in operations with sustainable taxi solutions. The reduction-potential of noise, local air quality and emissions of sustainable taxiing solutions are very significant in comparison to other air traffic management related reductions. The analysis shows that emission reductions of up to 400 kg of CO2 are possible (standard LTO taxi-out times, A320 family). 💡 Sustainable taxiing solutions should be therefore seriously considered as part of the overall sustainability package of the aviation sector. The lack of alignment of runway and gate planning causes major inefficiencies in the overall ATM system performance. Despite the solution building blocks perhaps present in theory, the state-of-the-art in practice relies on crude planning and routing functions (if at all present), human experience and partial automation at best. ATM is geared towards optimization of the gate-to-gate traffic. At the same time, the ground operation is increasingly congested featuring complex in- and outbound flows, different types of aircraft and ground vehicles as well infrastructural constraints and staff shortages. Improving the alignment between runway and gate planning is possible by means of Usher AI's deadlock-free, time-coordinated route for taxiing aircraft, resulting in less uncontrolled maneuvers (incidents) and more efficient and flexible usage of taxiways and the apron of airfields - as concluded also during the AEON project (https://lnkd.in/e5NR7puc). A modernized ATM will reduce delays, improve predictability and safety, reduce airport airside emissions and improve working circumstances for ground personnel. In addition, it facilitates the actors’ operational processes and improve passenger experience.
