February 2025 data for global #aircargo markets shows: ➡️ Total demand declined by 0.1% vs February 2024 levels (+0.4% for international operations), marking the 1st decline since mid-2023. ➡️ Capacity, decreased by 0.4% compared to February 2024 (+1.1% for international operations). “February saw a small contraction in air cargo demand, the first year-on-year decline since mid-2023. Much of this is explained by February 2024 being extraordinary—a leap year that was also boosted by Chinese New Year traffic, sea lane closures and a boom in e-commerce" said Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General. It is not surprising New Zealand's Commerce Commission has concluded that Auckland Airport's charges are excessive in the range of NZD150 million to NZD226 million. The economic regulatory framework is not fit-for-purpose and in urgent need for change.
New Zealand’s Commerce Commission has released its review of Auckland Airport’s price setting for 2022 to 2027. Unsurprisingly, the Commission concluded that Auckland Airport’s charges are excessive (to the tune of NZ$150 million to NZ$226 million!). While AIAL has responded by lowering its charges over the next 2 years in response to the review, the process does highlight that the economic regulatory framework in its current form is not fit-for-purpose and change is urgently needed. - The current light-touch regulatory approach means AIAL can set the aeronautical pricing as they wish. - Non-aeronautical activities (which generally draws much higher returns) are excluded from the purview of the Commerce Commission. - AIAL, being the sole monopoly provider, is able to game the regulatory process by setting their pricing artificially high at the start of the regulatory process. - While AIAL is investing significantly in infrastructure, there are outstanding concerns highlighted by airlines about the size, phasing, cost allocation and affordability of these major investments. Some of these costs could have been avoided if infrastructure planning and investments had been managed appropriately in the past. Aviation supports 5.6% of New Zealand’s GDP and 177,000 jobs. The delivery of demand driven, functional and cost-effective infrastructure will support the continued development of New Zealand’s aviation sector. While there exists consultation by AIAL, the process is ineffective and may not deliver the outcomes that are in the best interests of passengers. This needs to change. A slight growth in ✈️ passenger demand according to February 2025 data: ✅ Total demand increased by 2.6% YoY ✅ Total capacity grew by 2.0% YoY ✅ February's load factor reached 81.1%, up 0.4 ppt compared to previous year “February traffic hit an all time high, and the number of scheduled flights is set to continue increasing in March and April. But we need to keep a close eye on developments in North America, which saw falls in both domestic and international traffic,” said Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General. The IATA Annual Security Report (IASeR) highlights key issues within aviation #security while exploring the topics from a local, regional and global perspective. Reflecting on 2024 and looking ahead, IASeR addresses emerging issues, events, and threats, providing a robust foundation for #aviation security debates, initiatives, capacity development, and mitigation strategies. Breaking free from legacy thinking: the current approach to aviation security is often slow and reactive. This report aims to drive innovative modeling to tackle new threats head-on. With advanced screening technologies, AI, open architecture, and a deeper understanding of threats, we can envision a more efficient, secure, and passenger-friendly aviation system. 📥 Check out the short version of the IASeR 👇 For more info: https://bit.ly/4iG1MT2

Did you know that Power-to-Liquid (PtL) is uniquely positioned as the only #SAF production technology that can leverage a theoretically unlimited feedstock supply, carbon dioxide (CO2), while offering the potential for enhanced emission reductions? PtL can be produced from CO2 sourced from biomasses, industrial waste gases, or direct air capture, combined with green hydrogen generated primarily by renewable energy-powered electrolyzers. Although very energy intensive presently, these characteristics position PtL as a key #technology to overcome feedstock bottlenecks and help ensure that sufficient SAF will be available to reach #netzero by 2050. Even with growing interest, PtL projects struggle to reach commercial production without significant policy incentives. Long-term public financial support is central to mitigating high investment costs, reducing renewable energy premiums, and catalyzing private investments, thus enabling the ramp-up of PtL SAF, critical to the decarbonization of aviation. Along with our colleagues in Heathrow Reimagined: A Better Hub for Britain. we support the UK Civil Aviation Authority in its aim to ensure capital efficiency of Heathrow charges. It's vital the CAA move forward with this immediately, regardless of the timetable for future charges reviews or possible expansion.
"Whilst the Civil Aviation Authority's (CAA) announcement of a regulatory review for Heathrow expansion is a step forward, it doesn’t go far enough. Heathrow is the most expensive airport in the world and continues to fail passengers and airlines. We are concerned that the priority of the CAA has been to launch the “business as usual” review of passenger charges for the next five year period. The current flawed regime will lead to higher passenger charges which is why we urge the CAA to go even further and commit to an urgent and fundamental review of regulation at Heathrow." Commercial aviation continues to be one of the safest modes of public transportation. In 2024, the industry successfully transported 5 billion passengers worldwide on over 40 million flights. Globally, the all-accident rate of 1.13 per million flights (one accident per 880,000 flights) was better than the five-year average of 1.25 but worse than the 1.09 recorded in 2023. Let's zoom in on regional data: 🔵 North America: With 12 accidents, the all-accident rate improved from 1.53 per million sectors in 2023 to 1.20 in 2024 and was better than the region’s five-year average of 1.26. 🔵 Asia-Pacific: With seven accidents in 2024, the all-accident rate increased from 0.92 per million sectors in 2023 to 1.04 in 2024 but remained below the five-year regional average of 1.10. 🔵 Africa: With 10 accidents in 2024, the all-accident rate rose from 8.36 per million sectors in 2023 to 10.59 in 2024, exceeding the five-year average of 8.46. 🔵 Middle East and North Africa: With two accidents in 2024, the all-accident rate improved from 1.12 accidents per million sectors in 2023 to 1.08 in 2024 and was also better than its five-year average of 1.09. 🔵 Commonwealth of Independent States: With no accidents in 2024, the all-accident rate improved from 1.05 accidents per million sectors in 2023 to zero in 2024, an improvement over the region’s five-year average of 2.49. 🔵 Europe: With nine accidents in 2024, the all-accident rate increased slightly from 0.95 per million sectors in 2023 to 1.02 accidents in 2024. This rate is on par with the region’s five-year average accident rate of 1.02. 🔵 North Asia: With a single accident, the all-accident rate increased slightly from zero accidents per million sectors in 2023 to 0.13 in 2024. This was better than the region’s five-year average of 0.16 accidents per million sectors. 🔵 Latin America and the Caribbean: With five accidents in 2024, the all-accident rate increased from 0.73 accidents per million sectors in 2023 to 1.77 accidents in 2024. This was better than the five-year average of 2.00. The aviation industry is steadfast in its commitment to maintaining and enhancing safety. The accumulation of safety data is our most powerful tool. Learn more about the IATA Annual Safety Report 👉 https://lnkd.in/eAdfBXB #aviation #airlines #transportation #flying #travel #data #safety
