This week, we united with leaders from Arizona State University, University of Utah, University of Nevada-Las Vegas and Desert Research Institute to advance NSF Engines: Southwest Sustainability Innovation Engine (SWSIE). Together, we're building a hub for research, tech transfer and sustainable innovation in the Southwest. CEO Brian Sherman noted SWSIE's mission is to not only prepare the Southwest and its citizens to survive, but thrive -- and create a dynamic economic and social ecosystem that realizes the positive potential of carbon capture, water security and renewable energy, funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). Presidents Michael Crow, Taylor Randall, Keith Whitfield and Kumud Acharya highlighted how their institutions foster economic prosperity, workforce development and innovation. Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego stressed the importance of SWSIE's role in leading the way for solutions to leave the planet a better place for the next generation. ASU Julie Ann Wrigley Global Futures Laboratory's Peter Schlosser emphasized empowering young people with the agency to shape the future, while Gary Dirks and Hitendra Chaturvedi led panels on new energy technologies and entrepreneurship as keys to sustainable growth. Meredyth Hendricks announced a workforce challenge to accelerate sustainability in the Southwest to upskill employees in the region.
