The Thames Barrier comprises multiple moving metal gates that can halt water flow during potential flood events. Since its creation, London has successfully avoided costly storm-related death and destruction, but today’s changing climate and rising sea levels are challenging the integrity of London’s anti-flood walls. From 1980 to 1990, the barrier was closed only four times; from 2010 to 2020, the barrier was closed 50 times. It was never designed for such frequent use. In response to evolving weather patterns, the UK government created the Thames Estuary 2100 Plan, a future-looking plan that monitors and adapts the metal gates in response to tide data. With each decade, the plan outlines potential upgrades to the existing barrier and the construction of additional flood defenses. The plan hopes to futureproof London, but whether or not the Thames Barrier will stand the test of time will also depend on how climate change reshapes the world. https://lnkd.in/gF5rPkye

For 7 years now, Optimatics' customers have been utilizing InfoWorks apps and the Exchange API to connect their hydraulic models to Optimizer software. We expect more and more water professionals to adopt this data-driven hydraulic modeling way of working going forward, which is why we’ve recently strengthened our partnership with SUEZ Optimatics, who offer InfoWorks ICM and InfoWorks WS Pro to their clients. A great example of how our shared customers combine our software is when engineers or consultants want to solve a difficult CSO problem. Each of the many scenarios they create – whether only a handful or a few hundred – has a cost/benefit analysis associated with it evaluated within the analysis. The Optimizer software can significantly reduce the trial-and-error grunt-work and help turn those hundreds of alternative options into tens or hundreds of thousands of specific network configurations and corresponding model simulations, all with the goal of finding the absolute best solution for any particular project by automating the scenario analysis process. This CSO use case is one that we illustrated in a Water Talk, "Expanding the value of your integrated catchment models with Optimizer", which also features Jacobs Program Manager Tom Heinemann walking through the experience of helping the City of Omaha optimize their InfoWorks ICM model. They do an excellent job of explaining how these two pieces of software can inform long-term planning decisions. Do you know about "Total, live, and dead storage in InfoWorks ICM"? Ryan F Brown, PE, MS certainly does, and he breaks it all down in this video. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a toxic, colorless gas that can build up in sewer systems when organic matter decomposes. Chemical oxidation and other straightforward – but sometimes expensive – methods can be used to remove or minimize the risk of exposure, but hydraulic models can help as well. In fact, there is a quick-and-simple tool built into InfoWorks ICM that can help with evaluating risk of H2S build up in a system, and Ryan shows you how it works.
