Ended my short excursion to Madrid with a visit to Conde Duque, now home to Madrid’s Contemporary Art Museum and other research, exhibition, and performance spaces. The complex was originally built between 1717 and 1730 as a barracks, commissioned by King Philip V for the elite Royal Corps guards. The king stipulated that he wanted space “for 600 guards and 400 horses” hence its huge size. It was built in the Baroque style, with an intricately carved stone entrance and large central courtyard, once the biggest in Madrid. Definitely worth a visit for the architecture, adaptive reuse, and content. @centroculturaconded

The highlight of my brief time in Madrid was a private tour of the @normanfosterfdn ,which, in addition to housing Sir Foster’s life’s work, vast archives, drawings, models, and art/design collection and collaborations, is dedicated to promoting interdisciplinary thinking and research in architecture, urbanism, and design. It is an important global hub for architectural educational, research, exhibitions, and programs that explore innovative approaches to architecture and the built environment. The Foundation is housed in an historic building designed in 1921 by Joaquin Saldana for the Duke of Placencia in the Chamberi neighborhood. It has been meticulously restored and adapted to the Foundation’s uses, with a small and exquisite detached new glass pavilion for programs and temporary installations. The foundation’s space reflects Foster’s design philosophy of transparency, light, and flexibility, and serves as a dynamic platform for the exchange of ideas and knowledges. Images are insufficient to convey the importance, experience, and thoughtfulness of this initiative and the context it provides for understanding the greater role architects and architecture have played globally in the last half of the 20th and now 21st centuries. What a great addition to the patrimony of Madrid and the nation.

Italian designer, architect, friend, and collaborator, Gaetano Pesce, a pioneer and icon of the Radical Design movement has passed away at age 84. Pesce’s death in his adopted home of New York was announced by his studio on Instagram. “Over the course of six decades Gaetano revolutionized the worlds of art, design, architecture and the liminal spaces between these categories,” his studio wrote. “His originality and nerve are matched by none.” Pesce experimented with materials and production techniques to create design and decorative art objects imbued with political or religious meaning. His works are in the collections of major art and design museums. I am so lucky to have met Gaetano in the 1990s through one of his biggest fans, patrons, friends, and collectors, Kim and Al Eiber. @al_eiber was then on the @Wolfsonian Board and a huge fan and patron of the Italian master. He even convinced Gaetano to design a new resin welcome desk for the museum lobby which premiered with a special installation in 2001, at what was to have been the first Art Basel in Miami Beach. I hope it is still in the museum collection. I have modestly been collecting some of Gaetano’s works over the years but mostly his resin invitations uniquely designed for every exhibition opening over the past 15 or so years—one of which arrived just a few weeks ago announcing an opening that was to take place this week in Milano. RIP Maestro Pesce. Your work, contributions, innovation, spirit, and tenacity will never be forgotten. You are a legend.

Cathy Leff began her career in government working for the City of Miami during the Ferré administration. She later became an arts administrator as the director of The Wolfsonian-FIU and is currently the director of the Bakehouse Art Complex in Wynwood. Hence, there are few more qualified to discuss how the combination of art and politics in Miami during the 1980s helped to shape our current Miami. This piece was produced as a part of our ongoing collaboration with FIU Maurice A. Ferré Institute for Civic Leadership and was produced by Aaron Glickman and Meme Ferré.

The A.I.M. Biennial, a conceptual program promoting outdoor ephemeral, virtual, and physical art projects by cultural practitioners based and affiliated with the state of Florida, returns during Miami Art Week 2023 featuring 56 site-specific installations throughout South Florida, including one at Bakehouse by #Bakehouseartist Gonzalo Hernandez (pictured above). Organized by william cordova, Gean Moreno, Marie Vickles, and Amy Rosenblum-Martin, the mission of A.I.M.
