World-renowned orchestra performing regularly for Maryland audiences in Baltimore and Bethesda.
About us
For over a century, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) has been recognized as one of America’s leading orchestras and one of Maryland’s most significant cultural institutions. The orchestra is internationally renowned and locally admired for its innovation, performances, recordings, and educational outreach initiatives, including OrchKids. The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra performs annually for more than 275,000 people throughout Maryland. Since 1982, the BSO has performed at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall in Baltimore. Since 2005, with the opening of The Music Center at Strathmore in North Bethesda, MD, the BSO became the nation’s first orchestra to perform its full season of classical and pops concerts in two metropolitan areas. In July 2022, the BSO made history once again with its announcement that Jonathon Heyward would succeed Music Director Laureate and OrchKids Founder Marin Alsop as the Orchestra’s next Music Director. Maestro Heyward began his inaugural season in September 2023. The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra is a proud member of the League of American Orchestras.

We are fortunate to have Baltimore-based composer James Lee III as our 2024-25 Composer in Residence! This weekend, we'll perform another one of Lee III's moving works: “Chuphshah! Harriet's Drive to Canaan," following the extraordinary life of Harriet Tubman. After premiering this piece in 2011, we're excited to bring it back to the stage with Marin Alsop!

We recently kicked off the school year at the OrchKids instrument petting zoo at Mary Ann Winterling Elementary School! 🎺 The petting zoos allow students to try out many different instruments and find the one that suits them best. These students began their after-school programming with OrchKids this week. Over 2,000 students will receive high-quality music education this school year through OrchKids! We're also proud to share that the program expanded to include two new sites this year: the Henderson-Hopkins School and the Dorothy I. Height Elementary School. We are wishing all OrchKids students a wonderful year of music-making! 🫶

Thank you to our supporters, sponsors and BSO community for making this one of the most successful Gala and Season Opening Celebrations in our history! ✨ We're happy to share that the festivities at Strathmore and the Meyerhoff were our first sold-out gala concerts since the pandemic. The concerts featured the legendary Yo-Yo Ma, along with members of BSO OrchKids and the BSYO. A special thank you to Governor Wes Moore and First Lady Dawn Moore for once again serving as Honorary Co-Chairs of the Gala. 🎶 Read more about the celebration in The Baltimore Sun: https://bit.ly/4dhJofY

We kicked off the first ever Baltimore Symphony Orchestra Composer Mentoring project featuring our 24-25 composer in residence, James Lee III. James will spend time with 6 young composers from 3 partner institutions over the course of the year as they work on new compositions for small chamber ensembles. What a terrific year these aspiring composers are going to have as they develop their voices under James's guidance.

We're ecstatic to share that Governor Wes Moore and First Lady Dawn Moore will once again serve as Honorary Chairs at our annual Season Opening Celebrations this weekend! The Governor's administration has continued to be staunch supporters of the arts and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Just this past year, Governor Moore worked alongside our state legislature to secure funding for the BSO's Music for Maryland Summer Tour, bringing the power of live music to thousands across the state. We thank him and the First Lady for this and all of their efforts to ensure our artform flourishes for years to come. 🎶 We're proud to represent our great state!

We might be a bit biased, but we have the best supporters! 🤩 On Wednesday we celebrated the start of a new season with our Donor Appreciation Concert. It was wonderful to reconnect with members of our BSO community, and make new memories! We can't wait to continue the festivities next week at our Season Opening Celebration. See you there! 👋 📸 MK Martin
