🌍 GCC 2035 Conference Highlight: Shaping the Future of Regionalization, Trade, and Investments On October 3, 2024, the GCC 2035 Conference convened visionary leaders and experts from across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) to explore the next era of regional resilience, innovation, and economic integration. Held in Doha, Qatar, and co-hosted by Georgetown University McDonough School of Business, Georgetown University in Qatar, the Ministry of Finance Qatar, and the GCC Secretariat, the event provided a platform to assess the GCC’s pivotal role in navigating a rapidly evolving economic and geopolitical landscape. Notable participants included His Excellency Mr. Ali bin Ahmed Al Kuwari (Qatar), International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, H.E. Mohammed Al-Jadaan (Saudi Arabia), H.E. Salman bin Khalifa Al Khalifa (Bahrain), H.E. Hassan Al Thawadi, and leading executives and investors from across the region. “The GCC’s future hinges on strategic partnerships and economic diversification,” said IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva. “By leveraging its vast resources and deepening regional cooperation, the GCC is well-positioned to navigate global trade shifts and economic challenges. The region’s commitment to long-term sustainability—through investments in renewable energy, innovation, and capital markets—will ensure its resilience and leadership on the world stage.” In the opening panel, the GCC Finance and Economy Ministers underscored the importance of aligning national priorities with regional integration to navigate shifting trade patterns, geopolitical tensions, and rising nationalism. Kristalina Georgieva highlighted the critical role of partnerships between the IMF and GCC in driving economic resilience and sustainable growth, emphasizing, "The GCC’s transition from hydrocarbons to a diversified economy offers a unique opportunity to lead global markets in renewable energy, data-driven exports, and financial innovation. Strengthening capital markets, fostering private-led growth, and promoting multilateralism amidst global economic fragmentation, will position the region as a model for strategic economic transformation." The conference reaffirmed the importance of a coordinated and forward-thinking approach by the GCC, aimed at building a diversified, resilient, and interconnected economy that fosters sustainable growth and prosperity beyond its borders. By integrating renewable energy, developing AI-driven data solutions, and supporting private sector growth, the GCC is establishing itself as a global hub for innovation and resilience, with the IMF aiding these initiatives to enhance regional stability and competitiveness. Stay tuned for more updates on the key takeaways and insights from the overall conference discussions! Anil Khurana Daniela M. Joe Feuer Raj M. At the Future of Global Business Conference last week, David Rubenstein , co-founder and co-chairman of The Carlyle Group, opened the event with insights on the current challenges facing cross-border investment. He emphasized that, despite the benefits of open global markets, growing protectionist sentiments have intensified restrictions on foreign investments, with the U.S. particularly cautious about its economic ties to China. Rubenstein highlighted the complexities of maintaining international investments amidst shifting trade policies and stressed that business decisions today must balance both economic interests and national security concerns. See some of his remarks on geopolitics in the below video excerpt. David gave several pearls of wisdom, both for investing, as well as for students and the next generation of leaders, encouraging them to "be ethical, share the credit, learn how to communicate, and also try to give back to society" Thank you to Ricardo Ernst and Anil Khurana for moderating this session, as well as Georgetown University Graduate Investment Fund (GIF) and Georgetown Finance Club for sponsoring this session! Thank you to all who joined us at the second annual Future of Global Business Conference! This year's conference was centered around competition and collaboration in a fragmented world, and our speakers provided some key insights into how business is facing economic, geopolitical, and environmental issues. Key takeaways include: 🌎 In today’s turbulent world, having a global perspective is crucial for success, but businesses must also maintain a strong local presence. By adopting a "think global, act local" mindset, businesses can better navigate the complexities of different markets and regulatory environments. 🤝 Building strong relationships and fostering collaboration throughout value chains, rather than focusing solely on short-term profits, is key to long-term resilience. Leaders from across industries emphasized that businesses with a long-term outlook—prioritizing partnerships, innovation, and local stakeholder engagement—are better positioned to weather geopolitical risks and economic volatility. ☀️ Sustainability and social impact are no longer optional; they are fundamental to the future of profitable business. Consumers today are increasingly concerned about the ethical and environmental practices of the companies they support. Businesses that prioritize sustainability—whether through reducing carbon emissions, conserving water, or promoting fair labor practices—are not only fulfilling their social responsibility but also responding to growing market demand. More insights and highlights to come soon!

Delighted to have been asked to speak in the presence of the GCC Finance Ministers at the GCC 2035 conference in Doha on Thursday, hosted by the Qatar Ministry of Commerce, GCC Secretariat, and the Baratta Center for Global Business - Georgetown McDonough. I’ll be discussing the role of FDI in driving economic development in the GCC. Having served as the UK government's first HM Trade Commissioner for the Middle East, I’ve seen first hand how attracting and retaining inward investment has propelled Gulf economies from a hydrocarbon focus to leaders across sectors from fintech to manufacturing. https://lnkd.in/dAARWZqc
