#WITSML (Wellsite Information Transfer Standard Markup Language) is a crucial #DataExchange standard in the #OilAndGas industry, designed to streamline the #TransferOfDrilling and #GeologicalData. Conceived through an industry initiative championed by BP and Statoil, WITSML is an XML-based standard that provides a common language for diverse #softwaresystems and equipment used throughout well #operations. Since its launch, WITSML has grown to cover a wide range of data types, from basic well status updates to complex #drilling and #production metrics. By facilitating seamless data exchange, WITSML enhances operational efficiency, enables better decision-making through improved data accessibility, and reduces the costs associated with custom data integration solutions. Participation in this standard for drilling technologies now covers the majority of oil & gas #operators and service companies worldwide, making the vision of seamless integration of #DrillingTechnologies possible and enabling near real-time drilling optimization and the realization of the benefits promised by the #DigitalOilfield.
Now, this well-regarded data standard seeks to expand its structures to the plethora of data acquired in completion engineering. Unlike in drilling, operators have no "common language" to capture the various systems that come into play during well completions and workover operations. Instead, a fortune is spent on format-matching, transferring from one software system to another, and custom modification/aggregation of all the datasets going back and forth between different vendors-- or worse yet, operators are forced to accept a "garbage in, garbage out" attitude to the data they collect in the field.
In this Darcy strategy session, two highly regarded SMEs working with the non-profit industry consortium Energistics will discuss the current state of work to capture and transmit #completionsdata via expanded #WITSML standards, roadblocks and hurdles to these efforts, and a timeline to full rollout of completions data standards. Standard markup languages today need to be living, fluid languages to keep pace with the rate of technological advancement. Growing adoption of WITSML allows companies to build solutions for the future of oil and gas. As margins narrow and the structure of the oil and gas industry morphs forward, the more efficient a company can be at every stage of speculating, drilling, completion, analysis and recompletion, the greater their edge.
