Bellwether is a national nonprofit that exists to transform education to ensure systemically marginalized young people achieve outcomes that lead to fulfilling lives and flourishing communities. We work hand in hand with education leaders and organizations to accelerate their impact, inform and influence policy and program design, and share what we learn along the way. We envision a future where all young people have access to an equitable and excellent education and live lives filled with opportunity. We look to a future where the education system is effective, equitable, and responsive.

In a new Bellwether publication co-written by Jennifer Schiess and me, we examine new federal special education expenditure data. This analysis enables us to begin to understand the proportional roles of federal, state, and local funds in paying for special education services within and across states. At a high level, we found that the difference between district special education spending and their dedicated federal and state special education revenue is $24.1 billion, equal to an average local responsibility of $8,160 per student identified for special education services. Although limited and exploratory, this analysis and preliminary findings should encourage policymakers and advocates to examine special education funding in their states and districts more deeply.

✨ Celebrating One Year at Bellwether! ✨ Today marks one year since I joined Bellwether, and I couldn’t be more grateful for the journey so far. 🙌 The past year has been filled with learning, growth, and most importantly, incredible support from my amazing colleagues. I have appreciated their kindness and patience as I got acclimated to the work, and I am so fortunate to be surrounded by so many smart people and learn from them every day. And I'm thankful they put up with my Taylor Swift karaoke on Day 2 of the job. 💼 Together, we’re tackling critical challenges in education, especially for students furthest from opportunity, and I’m proud to contribute to work that makes a lasting impact on students, educators, and communities. Here's to another year of collaboration, learning, and making a difference! 🚀
