China's Liaozi Grand Bridge is a key link along the Chengkai Expressway that connects the centrally located Qinba Mountain region to the rest of the country. The Qinba Mountain region is the natural ecological barrier and cultural melting pot between the southern and northern regions. It is home to valuable agroforestry resources, however the area is economically underdeveloped. Completing the Liaozi Grand Bridge will reduce travel times by one-third and promote industrial and economic development to help revitalize the rural mountainous area. The 330.8-meter-long large-span arch bridge has a main deck length of 252 meters, with its highest point 186 meters - equivalent to a 60-story building - above the river surface. The mountainous and rugged terrain presented significant obstacles to transporting the multiple bridge components and the machinery necessary for its construction. China Railway Changjiang Transport Design Group Co., Ltd. is mainly responsible for digital design and 3D construction simulation. The team used Bentley applications to generate a reality mesh of the existing site from drone-captured images and create a 3D model of the bridge design. This allowed for meticulous planning and detailed construction simulations, ensuring project viability and worker safety. A construction process was adopted for the main arch that combines vertical and horizontal rotation, and the arch rib was constructed in a horizontal assembly on-site with support brackets. This helped minimize damage to existing vegetation in the bridge site area, reduce mountain excavation, and protect the original ecological environment. Using Bentley software helped to reduce the project's environmental footprint and laid the foundation for developing a digital twin for bridge maintenance and operations. This resulted in reduced design time and shortened the construction period by 55 days. #digitaltwin #engineering #infrastructure #3Dmodeling #realitymesh #bridges #construction #china

Imagine constructing a monument so massive and intricate that it would challenge modern engineers, using only primitive tools and a deep understanding of physics. That's exactly what the Neolithic people of Spain accomplished with the Menga dolmen, a colossal stone chamber dating back over 6,000 years. A recent study reveals, that this ancient monument, larger than even Stonehenge, was constructed with incredible precision and scientific knowledge. Researchers have uncovered evidence of sophisticated engineering techniques, including the use of ramps, counterweights, and even a rudimentary understanding of the arch. Today is National STEM Day, celebrated in the US to raise awareness and promote the importance of STEM education and careers. At Bentley, we have long engaged with rising engineers through our Future Talent programs and STEM education outreach. This work includes our collaborations with Enactus, AASHTO's STEM Outreach Solutions, Project Scientist, Discover Engineering, and Class of Your Own. Additionally, Bentley’s STEM Grant program allows each full-time colleague to direct USD 250 to a STEM education program of their choice. Through this program, colleagues have donated to various STEM education programs including Black Girls Code, Girl Geeks LatAM, Le Code des Filles, Govt Girls Primary School in Pakistan, and the Rukmini Foundation. In 2023, colleagues gave USD 590,000 in STEM grants globally. Thousands of New Yorkers regularly rely on the East 138th Street Bridge in the Bronx to enter Manhattan. The bridge interchange is a crucial access point along the Major Deegan Expressway which connects upstate New York to New York City. The bridge, built in 1938, had a 100-foot span that needed to be replaced. The project involved installing modular deck beams to replace the old bridge, remove the pier, and raise the vertical clearance. It also had to limit impacts on the different utilities and ensure pedestrian access, while keeping all lanes on the bridge and nearby intersections open during construction. New York State DOT used digital twin processes on critical bridge infrastructure to accurately convey project planning and prevent costly on-site construction issues. Using Bentley software helped the team share plans with over 180 reviewers across 15 agencies and address public concerns, which would not have been possible with conventional methods. NYSDOT set a new standard by using a digital twin as the primary contract document, industrializing the delivery of the bridge. The Three Gorges Yangjiang Shapa Offshore Wind Farm provides wind power to 2 million households in China's Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay area while reducing carbon emissions by approximately 4 million tons yearly. It stands as China's first offshore facility, located in Guangdong Province, with a total capacity of 1 gigawatt. During its development, SIDRI contended with the wind farm’s size while overcoming harsh conditions in the area to meet a tight construction schedule. With digital design and analysis, they automated and streamlined the process of modeling wind turbines and their foundations. Using the open digital twin platform, the project team optimized the management of virtual wind power assets, integrating construction and operations data to achieve intelligent plant management. Through the construction of this project, SIDRI can use the platform to provide smart operation & maintenance solutions for China Three Gorges Renewables (Group) Co., Ltd. to enhance its offshore wind power operation capabilities. #digitaltwin #3Dmodeling #offshorewind #energy #engineering #infrastructure [📷🎞️: courtesy of Shanghai Investigation, Design & Research Institute Co., Ltd.]

Over 100,000 vehicles cross the two spans of the Delaware Memorial Bridge daily. To protect those travelers from both accidental and intentional ship collisions, the Delaware River and Bay Authority (DRBA) is installing an advanced collision protection system, aided by a digital twin. The work involves constructing eight massive, stone-filled “dolphin” cylinders, each 80 feet across, designed to shield the bridge’s towers. The bridge's digital twin, created by Pennoni, will help engineers visualize the project's safety features before construction is completed. The model uses 3D Tiles, a standard developed by Cesium, to ingest and render vast amounts of 3D geospatial data. Construction began in 2023 after nearly a decade of planning to ensure the bridge's safety and resilience for many years to come. It is expected to be completed in 2025. Learn more about the work on the Delaware Memorial Bridge and how our partnership with Google and Cesium acquisition aims to support engineers with their work to build and maintain critical infrastructure. https://bit.ly/4eZIyGd #infrastructure #digitaltwins #3DTiles #bridges #roads #engineering

Embodied carbon and emissions associated with construction materials used in new infrastructure are expected to be responsible for half of the global carbon footprint between now and 2050. Our Carbon Analysis capabilities, part of the iTwin Experience, allow engineers to see a digital representation of the embodied carbon in their future projects. “Sustainable development occurs when you balance perfectly the environment, the economic and the social impact,” said Chris Bradshaw, our chief sustainability officer. “We see, fundamentally, a digital twin being the mechanism to help do that.” Read more: https://bit.ly/4hxx6U6 via Triple Pundit. #infrastructure #digitaltwin #carbonanalysis #AI
