London's iconic Canary Wharf business district is the second-largest financial center in the United Kingdom and one of the largest globally. The stunningly crafted South Dock, a new pedestrian bridge, is expected to be one of London's most frequented crossings. The bridge boasts a total length of 75 meters with a movable section stretching 35 meters, designed to enhance local connectivity and promote sustainable modes of travel, aiding in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Energy conservation efforts include a counterbalanced bascule section and machinery for bridge operations placed within an underwater dockside abutment. Designed as a bascule bridge with an overall span of 75 meters and a lifting span of 35 meters, the undertaking poses both technical and design complexities while situated in a high-profile area. Arcadis required a comprehensive digital approach to handle the project's particular engineering requirements and manage extensive data across numerous teams and interested parties. They accomplished this by developing intricate digital geological profiles that determined where the bridge's pile foundations would be situated. The team developed 3D subsurface models of the site to provide a full representation of the subsurface geology on site. By combining these models with visualizations of surface structures, they gained a better understanding of potential complications during construction. Through digital planning and design, the team reduced embodied carbon and provided a basis for construction monitoring and proactive maintenance, minimizing environmental impact. Once completed, it is expected to become one of the busiest pedestrian bridges in London and will improve walkable connections between existing public open spaces, like Jubilee Park. #engineering #construction #subsurface #modeling @arcadisglobal

The fast-growing city of Srinagar, India lacked a well-defined sewer and storm drainage system. City authorities contracted M/s Egis India Consulting Engineers to create a stormwater drainage system covering 767 square kilometers. Egis used analytic modeling to configure, evaluate, and compare different scenarios when designing the drainage system. The resulting drainage system reduced the flood risk for the city, solved the persistent problem of sewage discharge, and improved the residents' water quality and living conditions. Learn more about this and other examples of how cities use data and digital technology to empower engineers and global leaders to address climate change. 📰 https://bit.ly/3VD1zWs #climateaction #technology #engineering #infrastructure #sustainability

Florida's drawbridges, like the Bridge of Lions in St. Augustine, are not only charming landmarks but also essential infrastructure that play a crucial role in the state's transportation network. However, maintaining these aging structures can be challenging. During the recent Navigating the Future of AI and Transportation event hosted by Microsoft, city officials and industry experts including Bentley's David Lieberman, senior director for U.S. government relations, discussed how AI and other digital technologies can support and drive more efficient transportation infrastructure. Rail Baltica is revolutionizing the Baltic region's infrastructure, becoming the biggest project of its kind in a century. This ambitious 870km high-speed railway will bridge the gap between the Baltic states - Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania - and the European rail network. The planned railway line will operate four high-speed trains daily, taking just over three hours to travel the entire distance between Tallinn and Kaunas or Vilnius. IDOM designed 389 km (44% of the total line) in six different sections, which included 44 railway viaducts, 50 road viaducts, 15 bridges, 17 wildlife crossings, and power systems for the entire railway line. Using Bentley software for 3D modeling and clash detection helped them to facilitate smooth coordination among hundreds of companies and a global team of 150 multidisciplinary engineers. Construction is well underway with over 10 major railway crossing projects in progress and five more prepping for construction. The complex cross-border railway project aims to be fully operational by 2030. Once completed, Rail Baltica will be fully electrified. This translates to an 18.3% reduction in CO2 emissions, leading to cleaner air and a quieter environment with 4.5% less noise pollution. #infrastructure #engineering #digitaltwin #realitymodeling #RailBaltica #construction #sustainability

Challenge: Provide efficient and improved road access for residents in North Jakarta, threading obstacles above and below ground, while navigating around the work areas for two other projects. Solution: Design and construct a double-decker elevated toll bridge to help reduce congestion by diverting portions of traffic from the existing Harbour I roadway to the new toll road. Harbour Road 2, spanning along the Ancol River in Indonesia is expected to accommodate 63,500 vehicles per day. PT. Wijaya Karya (WIKA), an Indonesia-based firm, accessed the limited space and numerous intersection points to include a 3.95-kilometer double-decker bridge in the complex project. Together with the Harbour I roadway, it is expected to become the longest double-decker elevated toll road in the world. WIKA used Bentley software to complete designs that avoided many aboveground and belowground structures including gas pipelines, water pipes, and fiber optic cables. The team also had to avoid placing piers in nearby waterways, an Indonesian government mandate, that could negatively impact the ecosystem and existing river traffic. Completion of Harbour Road 2 will improve traffic and stimulate economic growth by providing easier access to the airport, nearby Jakarta International Stadium, and reclamation islands being developed by the state. #roadways #bridges #digitaltwin #engineering #infrastructure
