Port de la Selva, a Spanish coastal town, experienced a population surge this Summer, straining its water supply. To improve its water quality and supply, the town adopted advanced data analysis tools and a Soil Aquifer Treatment (SAT) system, recycling wastewater to recharge groundwater aquifers. Recycling wastewater through an SAT can be a viable solution to increase water supply and mitigate seawater intrusion. This European Commission article highlights how data analysis tools and other digital technologies can help coastal communities improve their water quality and water management systems. https://bit.ly/3XWkqya #WaterWiseEU #WaterManagement #Sustainability #Groundwater #Innovation

The Philippines' first-ever underground mass transit system, Metro Manila Subway Project (MMSP) aims to revolutionize transportation in Manila. Nicknamed the "crown jewel" of the government's infrastructure projects, the MMSP is designed to tackle chronic traffic congestion and pollution in the bustling metropolis. This underground railway is expected to cut travel times between Quezon City and the Ninoy Aquino International Airport from one hour and 30 minutes to 45 minutes, improving connectivity via a north-south backbone for the Greater Capital Region. As one of the world’s leading integrated engineering consulting firms, Oriental Consultants Global (OCG) was appointed MMSP’s project manager, responsible for design review, construction supervision, environmental monitoring, coordination, and support. Digital engineering and developing a common data environment using Bentley software have played an important role for OCG in this groundbreaking subway project, expected to boost the Philippines’ economy through improved connectivity with businesses and enterprises, while drastically reducing vehicle emission pollutants by 21% in the metro Manila area. Once completed the Metro Manila Subway is expected to serve one million passengers daily. [Images: Cityscape skyline of Manila. Constructed more than 50 years ago to reduce flood risk and generate clean hydropower, California's New Bullards Bar Dam plays a crucial role in providing a reliable water supply to communities in the Northern Sacramento Valley. Now, it is turning the tide on traditional dam monitoring thanks to recent upgrades to modernize its water management systems. Read about the Yuba Water Agency's digitization work to ensure the dam continues to provide a reliable water supply for communities in the Northern Sacramento Valley. https://bit.ly/3YiZtOr #water #watermanagement #geological #digitaltwin #iTwin #IoT #3Dmodeling #realitymesh #infrastructure #engineering

London's iconic Canary Wharf business district is the second-largest financial center in the United Kingdom and one of the largest globally. The stunningly crafted South Dock, a new pedestrian bridge, is expected to be one of London's most frequented crossings. The bridge boasts a total length of 75 meters with a movable section stretching 35 meters, designed to enhance local connectivity and promote sustainable modes of travel, aiding in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Energy conservation efforts include a counterbalanced bascule section and machinery for bridge operations placed within an underwater dockside abutment. Designed as a bascule bridge with an overall span of 75 meters and a lifting span of 35 meters, the undertaking poses both technical and design complexities while situated in a high-profile area. Arcadis required a comprehensive digital approach to handle the project's particular engineering requirements and manage extensive data across numerous teams and interested parties. They accomplished this by developing intricate digital geological profiles that determined where the bridge's pile foundations would be situated. The team developed 3D subsurface models of the site to provide a full representation of the subsurface geology on site. By combining these models with visualizations of surface structures, they gained a better understanding of potential complications during construction. Through digital planning and design, the team reduced embodied carbon and provided a basis for construction monitoring and proactive maintenance, minimizing environmental impact. Once completed, it is expected to become one of the busiest pedestrian bridges in London and will improve walkable connections between existing public open spaces, like Jubilee Park. #engineering #construction #subsurface #modeling @arcadisglobal

The fast-growing city of Srinagar, India lacked a well-defined sewer and storm drainage system. City authorities contracted M/s Egis India Consulting Engineers to create a stormwater drainage system covering 767 square kilometers. Egis used analytic modeling to configure, evaluate, and compare different scenarios when designing the drainage system. The resulting drainage system reduced the flood risk for the city, solved the persistent problem of sewage discharge, and improved the residents' water quality and living conditions. Learn more about this and other examples of how cities use data and digital technology to empower engineers and global leaders to address climate change. 📰 https://bit.ly/3VD1zWs #climateaction #technology #engineering #infrastructure #sustainability
