It's National Voter Registration Day and "Su voto es su Voz!" or "Your vote is your voice!" 🗳️ "Su voto es su Voz!" is a motto coined by Willie Velásquez, an American social activist who organized for Latino voting rights and formed the Southwest Voter Registration Education Project, a program that greatly increased Hispanic and Latino voter participation. National Voter Registration Day serves as a powerful reminder that every vote counts and everyone deserves to have a say in our democracy. This upcoming presidential election is an important one. Don't wait to make a difference. Have your voice heard by registering to vote today: https://lnkd.in/g6dKQvN

  • In 2017, Bet Tzedek represented homeowners in securing a $12 million settlement with Los Angeles County regarding the PACE program, which offers loans for home energy improvements. The program revealed a troubling pattern of predatory lending, with contractors deceiving vulnerable homeowners — particularly the elderly and non-English-speaking population — into making improvements they couldn’t afford. Homeowners who expected solar panels and other upgrades found themselves caught in a scam that put their homes at risk of foreclosure, causing significant financial distress. What steps would you take if you discovered your home improvement loan put you at risk? If you or a family member is a homeowner in financial distress due to a PACE loan, visit https://lnkd.in/gDV8zBDZ

  • Moctesuma Esparaza is a prominent film producer, entertainment executive, and community activist. His father was a refugee of the Mexican Revolution, which instilled in him a strong sense of the importance of social justice. In the late 1960s, following the Chicano Movement, Esparaza was one of the lead organizers of the Chicano Blowouts, a series of mass protests that erupted after years of educational disparities with Hispanics and Latinos. These protests, involving thousands of students in the Los Angeles area, were identified as "the first major mass protest against racism undertaken by Mexican-Americans in the history of the United States." We are honored to celebrate Moctesuma Esparaza's legacy of fighting for equal access to education for all. #HispanicHeritageMonth #50YearsOfJusticeForAll

  • #DidYouKnow that in 1982, the Supreme Court made a 5-4 decision to strike down a Texas statute that sought to deny funding to public schools admitting undocumented students? Plyler vs. Doe was a landmark case that changed the lives of immigrant families. It secured their right to the Equal Opportunity Clause of the 14th Amendment, which guarantees that no state can deny to any person equal protection of the laws, including access to public education. At Bet Tzedek, we offer free legal assistance to all Los Angeles communities, including immigrants and immigrant children.
