  • Moctesuma Esparaza is a prominent film producer, entertainment executive, and community activist. His father was a refugee of the Mexican Revolution, which instilled in him a strong sense of the importance of social justice. In the late 1960s, following the Chicano Movement, Esparaza was one of the lead organizers of the Chicano Blowouts, a series of mass protests that erupted after years of educational disparities with Hispanics and Latinos. These protests, involving thousands of students in the Los Angeles area, were identified as "the first major mass protest against racism undertaken by Mexican-Americans in the history of the United States." We are honored to celebrate Moctesuma Esparaza's legacy of fighting for equal access to education for all. #HispanicHeritageMonth #50YearsOfJusticeForAll

  • #DidYouKnow that in 1982, the Supreme Court made a 5-4 decision to strike down a Texas statute that sought to deny funding to public schools admitting undocumented students? Plyler vs. Doe was a landmark case that changed the lives of immigrant families. It secured their right to the Equal Opportunity Clause of the 14th Amendment, which guarantees that no state can deny to any person equal protection of the laws, including access to public education. At Bet Tzedek, we offer free legal assistance to all Los Angeles communities, including immigrants and immigrant children. • César Chávez is a name synonymous with the fight for justice regarding American workers and dignity for the nation's poor. Through peaceful protests, marches, and hunger strikes, Chávez led the farmworkers’ movement to victory. He raised awareness of injustices faced by vulnerable working groups and paved the way for better wages and working conditions that nearly 2.5 million farmworkers benefit from today. As we celebrate #HispanicHeritageMonth, let us reflect on Chávez's enduring contributions to civil rights, and find inspiration in his commitment to social justice through unity and nonviolent protest. #HispanicHeritageMonth #CesarChavez

Directing Attorney, Elder Justice & Caregiver Services | Bet Tzedek Legal Services | Passionate about Aging and Dependent Adult Populations & Addressing the Justice Gap

When 91-year-old Lisa connected with Bet Tzedek Legal Services’ Leaving Legacy Program she had no planning documents in place. Now widowed and battling a worsening health condition, Lisa was clear on wanting support to handle her own affairs. In her words, Lisa wanted to appoint her “baby daughter” as her agent to assist her in navigating her personal and health matters.  Bet Tzedek attorneys assisted Lisa with a Financial Power of Attorney and an Advance Health Care Directive, making both documents effective immediately so Lisa can receive the immediate support she desires. The team further reviewed Lisa’s economic security and identified she was struggling with a significant Supplemental Security Income (SSI) overpayment issue that was reducing her limited income to below $500 a month. Our team internally referred Lisa to a Bet Tzedek advocate who specializes in SSI matters, who is now working to obtain a waiver of the overpayment to ensure that Lisa has the resources she needs to age in place. Thanks to the County of Los Angeles Department of Consumer and Business Affairs support of the Leaving a Legacy Program our team is continuing to empower older adults who have lacked access to critical estate planning tools.  *Names  have been changed to protect confidentiality

President & CEO at Bet Tzedek Legal Services

Nearly a decade ago, Bet Tzedek Legal Services started to see a small tide of scams impacting older individuals that we anticipated would become a tidal wave. We started to receive call after call from these community members and their families, many in a panic and disarray, over the fact that their loved one had unknowingly sent money to a scam artist posing as their grandson, stuck in prison. Or perhaps they shared their bank information with someone claiming to be an FBI agent conducting a sting operation, needing their help.  Bet Tzedek jumped into action, hiring Alisa Anderson to conduct elder scam prevention presentations across the county. In short order, she had connected with dozens of older community members, helping them understand how to identify and avoid these pernicious scams. She also directed them to Bet Tzedek if they needed help fighting these scams. We are thrilled and proud to uplift a movie, #ThelmaMovie, that brings attention to this vital issue. Written and directed by Josh Margolin based on his own grandmother's brush with scammers, and with a powerhouse cast including June Squibb, Richard Roundtree, Parker Posey, and Malcolm McDowell, the film is a lighthearted, action-packed, and ultimately heartwarming story that treats all its characters — but most importantly the titular Thelma — with respect and dignity, something that we value a great deal at Bet Tzedek. We thank Josh and the team at Magnolia Pictures for helping to spread awareness on the issue of elder scams. You can watch #ThelmaMovie now on digital anywhere you get your movies. What better movie to watch on #NationalGrandparentsDay?! Check out the trailer below! • Bet Tzedek is the only legal aid agency in Los Angeles that handles conservatorship cases for free. We provide families with the legal tools necessary to protect loved ones who cannot make decisions for themselves due to illness or disability. In 2012, we helped Tyler Zuieback, a high school student with autism, retain a conservatorship so that his mother would remain his primary caregiver, allowing her to continue making important decisions on his behalf. Have you ever wondered what it takes to navigate the complexities of a conservatorship? We’re here to help. • Proud Bet Tzedek moment: our superstar client, Breanna — two-time Paralympian gold medalist — broke her world record at the 400-meter race at the Paris Paralympic Games this year! Meet Rosalyn (right) and her incredible daughter, Paralympic Champion Breanna (left), who came to Bet Tzedek when they faced a critical turning point in their lives. When Breanna, a girl with a bubbly personality, was diagnosed with autism at four years old, it was an era when autism was a relatively new and mystifying diagnosis. At that time, there was a noticeable lack of information, support, and understanding surrounding autism, particularly when it came to girls. Rosalyn, Breanna's dedicated mother, embarked on an unwavering quest for knowledge and resources. Breanna, an immensely talented young woman, was growing up and, like anyone, desired the independence to make her own decisions. However, due to her trusting nature, she was at risk of receiving advice from individuals who may not have her best interests at heart. Recognizing the need to "maintain some kind of connection,” Rosalyn turned to Bet Tzedek for support. Through the conservatorship they obtained, Breanna's parents gained the legal authority to assist her in making crucial life decisions. This newfound support led to a remarkable journey. Breanna, while attending college, discovered her extraordinary talent in track and field, securing scholarship offers, including one from Cal State L.A. Breanna, guided by her mother and her coaches, continued her athletic journey by pursuing Paralympic glory. She embarked on an incredible journey, achieving outstanding milestones. Here are some of her accomplishments before this year's Paris Paralympics: In 2016, in Brazil, she clinched a gold medal. She repeated this extraordinary feat in Japan in 2020 and, in a defining moment, broke the Paralympic world record in the 400-meter dash with a time of 55.11 seconds during the 2022 World Championships in Paris. We are so proud to help amazing people like Breanna and Rosalyn with conservatorships and other FREE legal services.
