This week our Better Learners Better Workers (BLBW) Ambassadors from Sheaf Training visited the new Henry Boot HQ at the Isaacs building in Sheffield, part of the Heart of the City development. Jack Kidder, Responsible Business Manager, explained to us the importance of greater collaboration between the Companies teams and attracting new talent. They also aim to reduce their carbon footprint and support the goal of being net zero by 2030. Learners took part in a careers based quiz finding out all about the varied roles available in Construction and heard about the history of the Company. We then went on a tour of some of the recently completed projects including, Pounds Park which is an award winning green space located in the heart of the city, The Kangaroo Works and Cambridge Street Collective, which is Europe’s largest food hall! Sheaf learners asked so many questions and on the tour, one learner quoted “ Makes you proud to be from Sheffield doesn’t it” It sure does! Thanks to Jack and his team for the support they give to our learners as always.

Today the Better Learners Better Workers (BLBW) Ambassadors from Sheaf Training visited Straaltechniek UK Limited in Sheffield, to learn more about opportunities in Engineering. The students heard from Chairman Graham Ward about the history of the Company and the products they design and manufacture. Graham proudly talked about their Apprentice programme and how many young people have worked their way up through the Company and achieving great things. Students had the opportunity to meet and hear from Reece who was a former BLBW Ambassador himself whilst at Yewlands Academy and has just completed his CNC Apprenticeship with Straaltechniek. Everyone then went on a tour of the works and witnessed some of the processes taking place such as Lazer cutting, fabrication and welding. Students asked some great questions and were really enthusiastic especially when Graham showed them his classic car collection in the display room. Thanks to Graham and Andy Allen for their support and for hosting the visit.

✨ Making a Difference with See it Be It! ✨ Our Sheffield team had an awesome time volunteering in the community through the See it Be It initiative. We teamed up with 150 Year 9 students at Cutlers Hall as part of the Better Learners, Better Workers programme. It was great to have our Group CIO and Exec sponsor for Sheffield, John Cummings, join us too! This was the kick-off session aimed at giving young people essential skills and real-world experiences to prep them for the workplace. Our Aviva volunteers led a fun skills booster session, helping guide these students with their future career prospects. Jack Thompson-Hall, Social impact & Sustainability Manager, said “It was so rewarding to see the enthusiasm and potential of these young minds. Together, we’re building a brighter future for our community!” #CommunityEngagement #YouthEmpowerment #BetterLearnersBetterWorkers #SeeItBeIt #SkillsForSuccess #FutureLeaders #AvivaVolunteers

On Tuesday 26th November, Ambassadors from Wath Academy had the privilege of being shown round one of Esh Group Construction projects at Riverside in Rotherham. Megan Roberts, Social Value Manager for Esh, facilitated the visit explaining her role in the industry and the many other roles available in Construction. The Ambassadors met with Tom, one of the apprentices and the Site Manager Geoff, to hear their personal stories and the more about the job they do. During the introductions, the students were given a fun task of guessing site machines and equipment found on a construction site. A safety briefing was carried out with a talk about why PPE (personal protective equipment) is used and the importance of it before receiving some to go out on site. They were given a tour around the site and an explanation of what they were doing, why they were doing and what they were achieving. The trip was successful and the students got the opportunity to understand more about construction, the jobs in it and how to get into the industry. Thanks to Megan and her team for their support as always.

𝗘𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗵𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱 The civils team in Sheffield have been busy in July with various social value projects, making positive change to the local community. Three highlights have been: ✅ Working with Opportunity Sheffield, Sisk’s team supported local people to overcome barriers to employment and enhance their career progression. All work experience placements passed their CSCS training, and are looking for paid work in the construction industry. We successfully placed two people in July…including Brad who features in the photos of this post…and have a further two lined up for August. ✅ Sisk part-sponsored the Better Learners, Better Workers graduation event in partnership with a local high school, King Edward VII, for one academic year. This programme offers a series of employer-led activities introducing young ambassadors to careers in civil engineering and construction. ✅ July also saw the final Future Endeavour coaching and mentoring session with All Saints High School. Sisk partnered with local employers and Endeavour Youth and Community, delivering fortnightly coaching and skills-building sessions using outdoor activities, workplace encounters and indoor creative workshops for one academic year. These are just some examples of the great social value work the team is undertaking each month around our two city centre sites in Sheffield - the Kelham Neepsend Active Travel scheme and the Fargate Future High Street Fund project. #WeAreSisk #SocialValue #Civils #Sheffield Dominic Hodges Lee Long CMgr MCMI Mike Widdicks Scott Cooper Amber Hendy Richard Gratton Emma Parker Sarah Ward Nichola Burkinshaw Katie Leather Opportunity Sheffield - Sheffield City Council Endeavour Youth and Community Better Learners Better Workers (BLBW) Sheffield City Council
