Today's F-word was definitely “Fermentation”. Of the biomass type. With micro-algae! With 2.3bn consumers in East and SE Asia, our network of Bezos Centers for Sustainable Protein would not be complete without one in this critically important region. Today we launched the third center at the National University of Singapore. Singapore has been a powerhouse for research on sustainable protein – the government led the way in investing and nurturing a vibrant ecosystem of start-ups and companies, they regulated before anyone else, and the research infrastructure is second to none. This center, housed in a top 10 global university, will look at biomass fermentation and how it can be combined with other approaches to produce hybrid products. This approach makes a lot of sense. Cultivated excels on taste, fermentation can deliver scale, volume and nutrition, and plant-based can nail the texture. What a team we have! National University of Singapore joins Imperial College London and North Carolina State University as a network of Bezos Centers for Sustainable Protein launched in the past 3 months which stand to catalyze new innovations that will deliver tasty, affordable and heathy sustainable proteins. It was an absolute privilege to meet with the President of Singapore, Mr. Tharman Shanmugaratnam and his wife Ms. Jane Ittogi as we launched our third Bezos Center for Sustainable Protein at the National University of Singapore. Asia is critically important for spurring innovation in how we produce our food — creating alternatives to meat that bolster food security and protect our environment, while meeting the tastes and demands of our global food systems. The center at NUS will help lead the way on sustainable proteins in the region, focusing on the potential of microalgae and biomass fermentation, while advancing research on meat cultivation and high-protein plant technologies. It will also collaborate with our other two centers at North Carolina State University and Imperial College London, all part of a bold USD $100 million initiative created by the Bezos Earth Fund and our partner The Good Food Institute to transform the production of food worldwide. Together we’re charting a more affordable, nutritious, and delicious future for food — and a more sustainable path for our planet. Learn more here: https://bit.ly/4gcoVvs.

CEO & President of Bezos Earth Fund Andrew Steer and I had the privilege of meeting with key stakeholders recently across the public and private sectors, focusing on South Africa’s critical Just Energy Transition (JET). The conversations were inspiring and underscored the importance of collaboration, innovation, and inclusivity in shaping a sustainable future. Key Highlights: • Komati Power Station Initiatives: We explored transformative projects aimed at repurposing the power station to create up to 4,000 local jobs, from steel manufacturing to climate-smart agriculture. This is a tangible example of how we can transition from coal while uplifting local communities. • Presidential Climate Commission (PCC): The PCC is leading the charge with a clear focus on market reforms, battery storage solutions, and green manufacturing. Our partner The Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP) - is committed to supporting these efforts, particularly in building a funding pipeline for key, catalytic projects. • Engagement with the Presidency: Our discussions reinforced the importance of a multi-sectoral approach. We’re excited about the upcoming JET Conference, which will address the societal impacts of the transition and the continued development of South Africa’s Energy Action Plan. We recognise South Africa’s just energy transition making strides but also recognizing the need to shift now from capacity building to also increase direct project funding, especially in manufacturing. Ensuring equitable access to renewable energy remains a priority. I’m encouraged by the momentum and the renewed enthusiasm from South Africa’s government, businesses, and communities. The journey ahead is complex, but with continued collaboration and pursuit of multi-stakeholder solutions - we believe we can with fellow partners make a lasting impact, creating sustainable, dignified jobs and a greener future for all. #JustEnergyTransition #SustainableDevelopment #GreenEconomy #SouthAfrica #Collaboration #Innovation

The vast grasslands of the Northern Great Plains support an amazing array of wildlife, yet this ecosystem is one of the most threatened and least protected in the country. Ranchers, farmers, Indigenous-led groups and the individuals who call this landscape home have come together around a common purpose: to safeguard this precious ecosystem for generations to come. Without locally led action, the destruction of this critical landscape would have global consequences. That’s why the Bezos Earth Fund and NFWF have teamed up to support this vision for vibrant, healthy grasslands that support biodiversity, carbon storage and America’s cultural richness. #grasslands #greatplains #prairie #conservation #wildlife

We are excited to announce the launch the Bezos Centre for Sustainable Protein at NUS that is set to shape the future of sustainable food! With a US$30 million grant from the Bezos Earth Fund, the Centre is set to lead groundbreaking research and commercialisation efforts to develop high-quality alternative proteins – the first of its kind in Asia. #NUSSustainability The Centre will focus on research in microalgae and biomass fermentation, supported by complementary research into cultivated meat and plant-based technologies to produce next-generation hybrid proteins that are affordable, nutritious and widely accepted. The Centre also aims to bring research innovations from lab to market, and develop talent through various education initiatives. #NUSImpact NUS Department of Food Science and Technology Read more here: https://nus.edu/4gbIh42.
Asia is home to 2.3 billion consumers, and the new Bezos Centre for Sustainable Protein at National University of Singapore is leading efforts to provide better, more sustainable protein options. As the first of its kind in the region, this Centre will revolutionize how we feed a growing population while protecting our planet. It joins similar Centres at North Carolina State University and Imperial College London, part of a bold $100 million initiative to transform food production and offer affordable, nutritious, and delicious protein alternatives. Proud that the Bezos Earth Fund is a founding funder of this. Enormous potential for meaningful emissions reductions, yet so little attention and funding has gone to livestock methane. Until now. The Enteric Fermentation R+D Accelerator is set to really move the needle.
Exciting news! The Enteric Fermentation R&D Accelerator (Accelerator) has released its Research Strategy, marking significant momentum in the fight to tackle livestock methane emissions. Agriculture accounts for about 40% of global anthropogenic methane emissions, with 70% of that coming from enteric fermentation—methane produced during livestock digestion. Since methane is 86 times more potent than CO2, reducing emissions across all sectors, including agriculture, is crucial to avoiding catastrophic climate change. The Accelerator is already advancing key research areas, including funding the development of low-cost measurement, microbiome characterization, low methane genetics, and vaccines. With the complete strategy in place, the Accelerator will redouble efforts to advance progress in additional, critical areas and help guide future investments. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eQt6EVYv
