Empowering the next generation of women in STEM is key to fostering a more diverse and innovative workforce. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County & The Inland Empire, along with fellow Orange County Business Council investors like Girls Inc. of Orange County and Girl Scouts of Orange County, are breaking down barriers in STEM through impactful mentorship programs and corporate partnerships. This school year, we’ve launched two new Workplace Mentoring cohorts with Edwards Lifesciences, Medtronic, and Johnson & Johnson, in collaboration with the CEO Leadership Alliance Orange County (CLAOC), focused on STEM. Imagine a young woman in college, shadowing a scientist at Johnson & Johnson and witnessing firsthand the next breakthrough in cancer treatment! By elevating young women in these fields, we’re showing the next generation that a career in STEM is not only possible but within reach. Through ongoing mentorship and support, they gain the confidence to pursue their passions and navigate challenges backed by a strong network of professionals. Through our solution-focused mentoring programs, we empower youth. We inspire change. We ignite potential.
About us
Big Brothers Big Sisters believes every child is born with potential. Yet, one-third of the nation’s youth are growing up without a mentor who can help them overcome challenges such as poverty, unstable housing, absentee parents, and lack of access to educational resources. Since 1958, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County and the Inland Empire has provided youth facing adversity with professionally-supported, one-to-one mentoring relationships. We tackle society’s issues head-on by delivering prevention-based, solution-focused mentoring programs that provide pathways for disconnected youth to achieve their educational dreams and succeed in living wage careers. With a caring mentor in their corner, youth are able to strive for long-term success and achieve their full potential. Our 4,000 volunteers, 4,000 children and families, staff, board of directors, and donors have chosen to invest in the future of Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties. Together, we empower youth. We inspire change. And we ignite potential. All through the power of mentoring.

Exciting news! The Senate has unanimously passed, and the House has introduced, the Big Brothers Big Sisters 120th Anniversary Resolution, thanks to Senators Maggie Hassan (D-NH) and Todd Young (R-IN), and Representatives Mary Gay Scanlon (D-PA) and Mark Amodei (R-NV). This bipartisan resolution recognizes BBBS's 120 years of mentoring impact, highlights mentorship's transformative power, and supports our program expansion. In late 2023, we welcomed Christina Sundermeier, M.S., our College and Career Resource Specialist, to the Support Services team—a rare role in mentoring programs. With a master's degree in career counseling from CSU Northridge and over seven years of experience, Christina has been instrumental in helping our youth achieve postsecondary success. Her no-cost college and career counseling and monthly workshops open doors for students who otherwise wouldn't have access to these resources. Christina's passion for our mission stems from her own experience as a first-generation college student: “Like many of the mentees I support, I come from a lower-income family and a single-parent household. I did not have the privilege to attend graduate school full-time because my grandma needed my financial support, but I always dreamed of completing my master's degree. It was my mentor, Merrill, who knew I was supporting my grandma and created that bridge into my graduate program, supporting me all throughout those four years and beyond.”

Preserving heritage while forging bold new paths — that is the Hispanic spirit. Our mentors can be the difference between a child dropping out of school and being the first in their family to earn a high school diploma. They serve as a source of motivation and inspiration for our young people, boosting their confidence in their academic abilities and their belief in their potential to achieve higher than they may have ever thought possible. With back to school, comes the restart of our High School Bigs Program, where we match elementary school students with high school mentors for after-school facilitated sessions weekly. This week High School Bigs Program Specialist Marcos Cubias was recognized by the Centralia School Board for the lasting impact he's made to the school community over the past two years showing what it means to lead with kindness, integrity and dedication. School administrators noted his leadership "supported, valued, encouraged youth to reach their full potential."
