About us

The Bioinformatics Italian Society (BITS) was established on June 19, 2003, as a nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing together researchers and practitioners in the field of Bioinformatics. This multidisciplinary science applies computational and informational techniques to solve complex biological problems at the molecular and cellular levels. With its foundation, BITS aims to support the growth and dissemination of Bioinformatics across scientific, academic, technological, and applied environments. Recognizing the pivotal role Bioinformatics plays in modern biology and its development of unique computer science methodologies for biological sectors, BITS has become a critical scientific support for fundamental biological disciplines such as Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics, and Biophysics. Additionally, it contributes significantly to the curriculum of undergraduate and specialized degrees within the framework of recent university reforms in biological and biotechnological fields. Beyond academia, Bioinformatics serves as an essential support discipline in hospitals and SMEs. Nationally, there's a pressing need for a cultural and research forum in this field to foster educational debate and place Italy among the leading countries in Bioinformatics, especially concerning specialized educator training. This initiative was further propelled by the Bioinformatics Cooperation Group, established in 1999 under SIBBM, and later supported by ABCD, highlighting interdisciplinary collaboration and annual scientific meetings. BITS now continues this legacy, organizing annual conferences, managing a web page for resource sharing, and facilitating international interactions, notably with the ISCB since 2001.
