Biotech Dodo reposted this
Twelve weeks ago at SomX we launched our brand new newsletter Biotech Dodo - here are a few things I’ve learned about newsletters. I didn't actually expect it to be such a hit so quickly, but hundreds of you have subscribed (appreciate you 🙏🏼) so I thought I'd share a behind the scenes on how we went about planning and executing on a new format that might be helpful if you're planning a newsletter. 1. We wanted to add value to the community by splitting the biotech stories out of Healthtech Pigeon and creating a brand for the biotech space. 2. We knew the Healthtech Pigeon format worked, which, broadly, is to curate the best news, podcasts and opportunities and add an analyses with humour to make it insightful and fun to read. 3. We didn't want it to be exactly the same and biotech has an additional challenge - lots of very hard science. So the question was: how do we add the most value to our readers? 4. We experimented with various formats, but felt that biotech news articles can sometimes be difficult to follow, require a lot of prior knowledge and reading article after article can be heavy and tough to do, so summarising the science was a definite value-add. 5. But, just summarising didn't add enough value, and the most common feeling after reading news articles was 'so what,' which is why for each article, we've added 'our take' which gives our reflection and opinion on that story, which helps readers understand where the current news fits into what's going on overall in that area. 6. We ran a pilot and knew at that point we had our format and thanks to those people that have messaged to say you're enjoying it. 7. For the name - my Dad's from Mauritius and Dodo's are (were ☹️) hilarious so that wrote itself. And the cartoon bird thing has given us all a bit of light entertainment over the years so why not! With newsletters I think it's really important to get out of your own head with your own wants and wishes. For the quickest growth, it's about figuring out the audience you want to help and actually finding the best way to help them. Yes, have a vision for broadly what you want to do, who you want to do it for and how you want to do it, but work out and iterate the detail with a serious focus on the value add. Avoid recycling your company news and messages and expecting people to subscribe. Make the newsletter as practically useful as possible. To subscribe to our new one - head to Biotech Dodo & hit "Visit Website" PS - dodo emoji is ideal 🦤 #biotech #healthtech #newsletter #pharma
