Who is Harold Lee III, Ph.D.? Dr. Harold Lee currently serves as a National Security Analyst at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) where he uses his technical expertise to solve some of the nation’s most challenging problems. Dr. Lee’s technical expertise includes the fabrication of nanomaterials, additive manufacturing using nanomaterials, fabrication & testing of novel composites, materials for extreme thermal, chemical, & radiation environments, and organic electronic materials & devices. Prior to joining APL, Dr. Lee did stints at Sandia National Labs, Northrop Grumman, and the National Science Foundation (NSF). He received his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Norfolk State University (NSU) under the mentorship of Dr. Sam Sun. Dr. Lee’s research has led to 50+ presentations and publications in peer-reviewed journals, at scientific conferences in both unclassified and classified domains. "In the hot seat of an interview, one of the toughest questions you're likely to face is: 'Why should we hire you? What sets you apart from the other candidates?' How you answer this question depends on where you are in the interview, but the fundamentals remain the same. Focus on your soft skills, and weave them into the company's mission statement, values, and culture. Remember, people hire people, and one of the main reasons candidates don't get the job isn't due to a lack of technical skills—it’s because of a mismatch in attitude and cultural fit with the company's goals. Storytelling is key. You might think you need to be a natural storyteller to answer this question effectively, but that’s just an excuse. The truth is, it’s all about preparation, practice, and repetition. The more you prepare, the easier this question becomes to answer, and eventually, you'll even look forward to it. When you’re asked why you should be hired, you're not just listing qualifications. You’re aligning yourself with the company’s goals, showing how you can contribute to their success while demonstrating your personal values and how they mesh with the team’s culture. The right answer is never about being 'the best' candidate on paper—it's about showing why you're the right candidate for them."
