  • The Winnipeg Roundtable during the BSO National Tour was energizing, and once again, the weather couldn’t have been better! Every stop on the tour, I’ve been blessed with bright, sunny, warm fall days, and Winnipeg was no different. I enjoyed a stunning view of the Canadian Human Rights Museum from my hotel—such an impressive piece of architecture. At the roundtable, we had a fantastic turnout of local Black producers and creatives eager to share their work and connect. From Relationship Remix and Kung Fu and Basketball to short documentaries and new film projects, the energy in the room was inspiring. One participant said, "This is great for interpersonal interaction, and [you] touching down in each province is very much appreciated." Another said: "What I’d like to get out of this meeting is to meet other Black creators in Winnipeg because I haven’t met that many, and this is such a great opportunity to connect." Yet another attendee said, "They [decision-makers] don't know us. We have less access to the same networking level as Toronto creators.” I also had the pleasure of catching up with Phyllis Laing from Buffalo Gals, Sami Tesfazghi from Inferno Pictures (The Porter), Lindsay Somers from On Screen Manitoba, and Joy Loewen from CMF, who all made me feel incredibly welcome in Manitoba. Thanks to Manitoba Film and Music for hosting the Roundtable and the National Screen Institute's support! #Winnipeg #BSOTour #BlackScreenOffice #ManitobaFilmandMusic, #NSI

  • The Rogers-BSO Script Development Fund Writers' Retreat (Sept 29 - Oct 2, 2024) at  Shamrock Lodge, Lake Rosseau, Ontario, was a truly inspiring experience! Over these four days, writers, facilitators, guest speakers, and BSO staff came together for an exciting, instructive, and thought-provoking journey of creativity and growth. From deep dives into pilot design, structure, and character development to understanding the intricacies of both scripted and documentary storytelling, participants sharpened their skills under the expert guidance of our facilitators, including Alison Duke, Glenn Cockburn and Al Magee. We were also thrilled to hear from guest speaker Seneca Aaron, whose insights into the evolving TV landscape and the challenges of the industry were both eye-opening and motivating. With renewed energy, the writers are now ready to tackle the exciting process of bringing their outlines to life—moving from first to second drafts with newfound confidence and clarity. We can't wait to see their scripts come to fruition! #BSO #Rogers-BSO #CISF #BlackScreenOffice
