Connecting diverse experts to understand the role of Blastocystis in the gut ecosystem, health and disease
About us
Blastocystis colonizes at least one billion people. It the most prevalent intestinal microbial eukaryote. A high proportion of carriers are asymptomatic. Despite a century of studies, pathogenicity of Blastocystis remains controversial. Information on prevalence, geographic distribution and host specificity is incomplete. Substantial gaps exist on environmental presence of Blastocystis. This lack of data blurs the Blastocystis landscape considerably. Our COST Action brings together experts from diverse fields and locations to support the research in this field.

If #Blastocystis is mainly a parasite of those who like fiber and leafy greens, it may come as no surprise that we found cats and dogs not to be natural hosts of this parasite. https://lnkd.in/dcbT9w2N Supaluk Popruk at Mahidol University - well done! And thanks to Lee O'Brien Andersenm for developing the model. Thanks Elsevier for publishing our data

I attended a great conference in Crete this week on our COST Project of the ”still-enigmatic protozoan”, Blastocystis. Research findings in the last three decades shifted our understanding of its role in our gut particularly, from an underestimated, neglected pathogen to mostly a firm component of eubiosis (yet still sparing its uncommon pathogenicity to the presence of various contributing factors). New findings contribute to its significance in One Health as well, as it is a common protozoan in not only the humans but also in many animal species and environmental sources like water. Presentations of the young researchers were great and promising in the conference as well👏👏👏 #Blastocystis2024
