About us
The Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative—a program of the Bloomberg Center for Cities at Harvard University—is a collaboration between Harvard Kennedy School, Harvard Business School, and Bloomberg Philanthropies. Its mission is to equip mayors and senior city officials to tackle complex challenges in their cities and improve the quality of life of their residents. The Initiative is committed to advancing research and developing new curriculum and teaching tools to help city leaders solve real-world problems. This approach is designed to help unlock the full potential and optimize the performance of cities. If mayors and their organizations thrive, cities can adapt, endure, and thrive as well.

We are gratified to be part of an ongoing learning cycle—studying and learning from cities, developing and publishing rigorous, peer-reviewed research, and sharing insights with other cities around the world. Exciting to hear that Kyiv is making informed decisions about collaborations through insights from the dozens of cities that participated in this research authored by Katharine Robb, Michelle LaPointe, PhD, Kathryn Hemsing, Grant Anderson, and James Anderson. Deputy Mayor & Chief Digital Transformation Officer | Powering Kyiv Resilience and Innovation | Shaping Global Cities through Leadership
Grateful to James Anderson and Bloomberg Philanthropies for their insightful contribution through the Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative. The article highlights the crucial role of Inter-City Collaboration (ICC) in tackling shared urban challenges. Although published just a few years ago, the ideas have proven valid as #ConnectedCommunities increasingly form alliances - whether through policy-focused coalitions or operational partnerships - to maximize our shared efforts and build strong #partnerships across the region For #DigitalLeadership, recognizing the different structures and benefits of ICCs is vital for making strategic choices that align with long-term goals and deliver meaningful impact. While Kyiv isn’t mentioned in the article, we have adopted a hybrid approach, utilizing ICC best practices with a focus on advancing #ResilientCities. #BlueprintForTomorrow

GovEx and the Bloomberg Center for Cities at Harvard University are proud that the City of Cape Town, a recent participant in our joint municipal data track, has launched Africa’s FIRST citywide data strategy! In partnership with the Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative, a yearlong program of the Bloomberg Center for Cities, GovEx coaches guided Cape Town leaders through the Initiative’s Data track, helping them build data skills and practices that complemented the city’s existing efforts to deliver a workforce-wide data plan. The Data track aims to increase transparency and make data more accessible to city residents, while helping the local government improve service delivery through evidence-based decision making. “We are just getting started, and we encourage the public to continue working with us as we improve the quality and scope of data,” said Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis. We had the most incredible week learning from incomparable staff at Harvard University and The People Lab. Huge thanks to our Mayor, Satya Rhodes-Conway for encouraging our team to learn from and employ the innovative strategies and ideas gleaned from the esteemed faculty there, as well as from the other participating cities. It was jam packed with learning, but I’m so grateful to our focused and driven team, including Jessica Jones Victoria Larson, and Anne Nowak (she/they) for really digging in and putting in the hard work together. So full of gratitude and inspiration! Massive thanks to Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative for this phenomenal opportunity.

A great example of city-wide collaboration in action from the City of Green Bay through their participation in the collaboration track of the yearlong program for mayors and city leaders. It's exciting to see the city and community working together to develop affordable housing, green spaces, and recreational areas. Congratulations on your transformative project! #leadership #centerforcities #collaboration #GreenBay

Green Bay’s Transformation: A Powerful Collaborative Effort Across All Sectors This is a story of unity and transformation. It's about how Green Bay came together. Here’s how it happened: 1) Uniting for a Common Purpose ↳ It began with a generous donation from JBS Foods in 2020. ↳ JBS gifted 25.61 acres of land and $500,000 to the City of Green Bay. ↳ This laid the foundation for affordable housing, green spaces, and recreational areas. 2) Collaboration in Action ↳ Mayor Eric Genrich ensured diverse voices were heard through the Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative. ↳ Over 40 stakeholders, including public, private and nonprofit leaders and community members, are involved. ↳ GRAEF, a Green Bay-based consulting firm, played a key role. ↳ They developed conceptual plans with input from all the stakeholders and the community. 3) Significant Financial Boost ↳ Governor Tony Evers contributed $5 million in ARPA funds. 4) The Impact of Coming Together ↳ This effort is more than just construction. ↳ It’s about creating a thriving, sustainable community. ↳ Affordable housing, wellness-promoting recreational areas, and an urban farm are key features. 5) A Model of Community Collaboration ↳ This project is a model of what happens when sectors unite. ↳ JBS’s donation, GRAEF’s expertise, state support, and local leadership are making a lasting impact. ↳ Green Bay is setting a powerful example of collaboration. This project shows that when a city unites, transformative change is possible. This project is more than housing; it’s a vision for a sustainable, inclusive future. It shows what can be achieved when diverse stakeholders work together. The JBS redevelopment project is set to leave a lasting, positive legacy for generations to come.
