  • There is a lot of inaccurate information out there about Medicare Advantage. Nebraskans have trusted us with their health care coverage for more than 85 years, to provide them with accurate information and benefits they can count on. We want to set the record straight about Medicare Advantage. Medicare Advantage saves seniors money. For seniors living under a fixed budget, Medicare Advantage provides them with an affordable way to get the care they need at a price they can afford. In fact, according to the Better Medicare Alliance, seniors covered under a Medicare Advantage plan spend 40% less in out-of-pocket costs and premiums than individuals covered under Original Medicare and supplemental coverage. • BCBSNE’s employee resource group (ERG) Latinos Empowered to Achieve their Potential (LEAP) continues their celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. Shelya Reyes, senior risk adjustment coordinator, and Marisol Cardenas, claims auditor, reflect on the importance of family in their culture. “The family unit is the single most important unit among Hispanics and Latinos,” Sheyla said. “I was born and raised in Cuba. Despite the extreme poverty because of the dictatorship government, I grew up around my family surrounded by love, sociability, playfulness and support. We all rebuilt our lives here, but we keep the family traditions.” Marisol says that her family made every holiday cheerful. “Holidays and birthdays are very important to Latino culture,” Marisol said. “I remember the entire family would come together to celebrate every birthday and holiday. I remember my grandparents’ house being filled with so many good conversations, laughter and lots of love! Those will forever be my favorite memories.” Both Sheyla and Marisol have an admiration for Latino role models. “Celia Cruz was a Cuban American singer, best known as one of the most popular salsa performers of all time,” Sheyla said. “She became one of the few women to succeed in the male-dominated world of salsa music back in the 1960s. She created a nonprofit organization dedicated to offering financial aid to Latino students who wish to study music.” Marisol also finds inspiration from a musician. “Jenny Rivera is the Latino role model that I admire,” Marisol said. “She was a singer, actress, song writer and producer. She inspired me and a lot of women to follow their dreams and to never stop, no matter the obstacles.” Sheyla’s favorite dish from her culture is ropa vieja, which includes stewed shredded beef with slow cooked tomatoes, onions, peppers, garlic and wine. Marisol enjoys pozole, a traditional Mexican soup with chicken and pork that has roots from the Aztecs.
