Using Canva to create your resume? Read this post - one wrong click could lead to resume rejections without you even knowing it! PDFs are the gold standard for resume submissions, but not all PDFs are created equally. When an applicant tracking system is reading a PDF resume, it typically relies on decades-old optical character recognition technology to "read" the text on the page and parse that information into the database. For PDFs created in MS Word or Google Docs, this is no problem - the text is still exported as text, easily readable by OCR technology. But that same technology cannot read text that's embedded within an image. Here's where the problem comes in: when exporting a PDF from Canva, it gives you the innocent option of "Flatten PDF." What this will do is flatten your document into a single, static image - but what they won't tell you is that the resulting PDF won't be readable by optical character recognition! What happens when this flattened PDF is entered into an applicant tracking system? Without any text to read, it's possible that the system has no idea what's on the document and just rejects it entirely - potentially without any notice to you at all. So untick that "Flatten PDF" box and send in that resume!
