🎉 Legal victory in the fight against police brutality and towards accountability! In 2022, Just Voices Iowa sued the city of Des Moines to obtain access to 300+ police reports documenting use of force during the 2020 protests. The Iowa Supreme Court just upheld a lower court's ruling in favor of Just Voices: the public has a right to access these records. Last week, I had the privilege of attending the OXFAM America International Women’s Day Advocacy Conference. Being surrounded by passionate activists from across the country — people deeply committed to their communities — was nothing short of inspiring. My first time lobbying on Capitol Hill left a lasting mark. Walking through the halls where decisions are made, sharing stories from my community, and directly engaging with lawmakers was both humbling and empowering. It challenged me to think critically, advocate boldly, and stand firmly in my beliefs. I left with sharpened advocacy skills, a strengthened voice, and a renewed commitment to fighting for justice. One critical issue I advocated for was allowing the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act to expire. This legislation was never meant to strengthen our communities — it fueled inequality by giving massive tax breaks to the ultra-wealthy while adding trillions to the national deficit, leading to the underfunding of already stressed public services. The top 0.1% received an average tax cut of $252,300, while the bottom 20% saw just $70. And during this #WomensHistoryMonth, it is essential to recognize that Tax Justice is Gender Justice. When the wealthiest get massive tax breaks, women — especially those from marginalized communities — bear the brunt. As essential programs are underfunded, Women are often left to fill the gaps, deepening economic and gender inequality. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Reclaiming $5.5 trillion over the next decade could mean transformative investments in our communities and planet. Reinvesting in our people can give future generations the opportunity to live lives full of joy and dignity. This is a moment for bold action, and I’m committed to fighting for a more just and equitable future. Hope is a discipline, and even in these challenging times, I’m holding onto it. I’m deeply grateful for this opportunity and the incredible advocates I stood alongside.
