PROVIDENCE — Six Rhode Island car dealerships have reached settlements with state Attorney General Peter Neronha after prosecutors alleged last month the retailers committed deceptive sales practices by charging or attempting to charge customers “add-on warranty” fees that were not advertised in vehicle prices. Flood Ford of East Greenwich, Flood Mazda of East Greenwich, Flood Ford of Narragansett, Valenti Subaru of Westerly, Valenti Toyota of Westerly, and Saccucci Honda of Middletown will collectively pay out more than $1 million to the state and in refunds to customers – which total $874,958, alone – under the terms of the three settlements, Neronha’s office announced Thursday. Customers who paid the fee since Jan. 1, 2021 will receive between $53 and $83 each as a result of the settlements and will also retain the benefits of the warranty, officials said. I wrote about Snowtown, the mixed-race Providence neighborhood that was wiped out to build the Rhode Island State House, a railroad station, and other businesses on Smith Hill. The properties along Francis, Smith and Gaspee streets were condemned. The residents vanished into the city and their stories went untold for more than 120 years.
