About us
The Boston Foundation is one of the nation’s first and most impactful community foundations, with $1.9 billion in assets. Partnering with community members, donors, the public sector, businesses and nonprofits, we exist to close the gaps caused by our city’s greatest disparities, to advance economic justice, and to help build a better Boston. We collect data, commission research, share knowledge, develop dynamic programs, fuel new ideas and fund change. Our work informs public policy, catalyzes conversations and advocates not only for change, but for repair of the historical harms of inequity. Ultimately, we aim to support, contribute and create well-being and opportunity within our communities. TBF is also one of New England’s largest grantmakers, supporting nonprofits in Greater Boston through our endowment and working closely with our donors to support nonprofits locally, nationally and internationally.

There are just a few more days left to respond to the Massachusetts Nonprofits Federal Impacts Survey! Join over 500+ nonprofit leaders in the community who have already given their feedback and share your thoughts by 3/21: https://bit.ly/41BZ3CQ TBF alongside our survey partners Massachusetts Nonprofit Network and The MassINC Polling Group look forward to reporting out the results widely.
Deep gratitude to the 500+ nonprofit leaders (so far) who have taken the time to respond to the Massachusetts Nonprofits Federal Impacts Survey. For sector allies, it should not be surprising that the pain, fear, and destabilizing impacts of federal cuts and attacks are already being visited upon nonprofits and communities across the Commonwealth. If you work for a nonprofit in MA and haven't had a chance to complete the survey, we encourage you to do so before it closes on 3/21. Nonprofits can access the survey link in TBF's most recent edition of its Nonprofit Update e-newsletter here: https://lnkd.in/eWqYPivz (it's the second entry down). Survey partners Massachusetts Nonprofit Network, The MassINC Polling Group and The Boston Foundation look forward to reporting out the results widely in the coming weeks and at a hybrid forum for nonprofits, funders, policymakers, and donors on May 5th (please save the date!). #nonprofits #massachusetts #executiveorders #federalcuts #safetynet #grants #funding #philanthropy

Could a revival of Single-Room Occupancy (SRO) housing help fix Boston’s housing crisis? This is the question posed by the latest research brief by Boston Indicators. Once common, Boston was for a time home to thousands of SRO units, historically providing critical affordable housing for low-income and transient residents, especially new immigrants. Boston had as many as 55,000 units in the late 1800’s. Today only about 3,500 remain. As housing costs continue to rise and homelessness rates increase, this brief explores whether SROs could once again play a role in addressing Boston’s housing shortage. Preserving existing housing and preventing displacement is essential for supporting residents and providing an affordable place to live and thrive. TBF joined Mayor Wu, Related Beal, elected officials, supporting organizations, and residents yesterday in Mattapan to announce that the 347 homes at Fairlawn Estates will become permanently affordable housing, protecting the Fairlawn residents from displacement.
